Shakespeare portrays a twisted relationship between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth in this play. Although men are viewed as highly respected and the leaders in this time period, Lady Macbeth seems to ”wear the pants in this relationship”. Many topics are explored throughout the play like blood , animal and nature imagery but one that always is brought up is the question of “manhood”. Shakespeare, through his personalities, expresses some different possible views on the subject,and through all these one may sort to find his true belief on the topic.

Macbeth has already risen to his wife’s definition of manhood, and in fact the viewpoints of each of them begin to change. Macbeth becomes the daring one and his Lady becomes the one who is slow and unwilling to dare. Malcolm also comes into the picture on the subject of manhood, later when he is encouraging Macduff to fight “But I must also feel it as a man”.
