This paper will explain what happens in act 3, scene 4. A quick summary of what happens is that after Banquo is murdered, his ghost comes back to haunt Macbeth. Banquo's ghost can only be seen by Macbeth.
In this scene, a banquet is being held by Macbeth and lady Macbeth. Ross, Lennox, lords, and their attendants are also at the banquet. When everyone enters, Macbeth says that everyone knows where to sit. The reason everyone knows where to sit is because, everyone is seated according to their ranks in the military.
The banquet goes on as planned until one of Banquo's murderers enters the room. When Macbeth notices the murderer, he shows his guests where he will set, and he tells the murderer that he has blood on his face. The murderer says that the blood must be from Banquo, when he cut his throat. Macbeth compliments the murderer on his throat cutting abilities. Before Macbeth gets too cheerful, the murderer has to break some bad news. The bad news is that Fleance (Banquo's son) has escaped. Here, Macbeth realizes that if something is not done to Banquo, his sons will become Kings. Macbeth can not have this. He had already worried that his soul will go to hell for what he had done. His fear become evident in this scene also, "But to be safely thus: our fears in Banquo Stick deep;" [Act III, S I, L 53-54] Macbeth has Banquo murdered,

During the rising action of the play, Macbeth commits a series of murders to not only inherit the throne but to also stay on the throne. In fact. after the nobles and Lennox have come to a conclusion that Macbeth commits the regicide of Duncan, the noble expresses his feelings towards the situation, " The son of Duncan, From whom this tyrant holds due to birth," (3.6. 25-26). Due to Macbeth's actions, all the respect and support from the nobles have been lost because they begin to illustrate Macbeth as a "tyrant" thus emphasizing that all his supports are against him now. In addition after Banquo was murdered, Macbeth start seeing the ghost of Banquo and he yells out, " Thou canst you say I did it: never shake/ Thy gory lock at me." (3.4.63-64).
He tells lie after lie and keeps making them bigger. Him and Lady Macbeth are planning to kill the king. “When we have marked with blood, those sleepy two of his own chamber and used their very dagger” (324). They are going to lie about who killed the king by framing the guards that stand outside his room protecting him. They are going to spill blood on them and then the daggers that they used to kill the king, they will plant on the guards. When the king is announced dead, Macbeth and his wife both act sad and shocked like everyone else. After Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost at the banquet, he starts acting weird. Lady Macbeth says to everyone not to worry that it is just a sickness he has had since birth. “You have displaced the mirth, broke the good meeting, with most admired disorder” (351). Lady Macbeth is annoyed at her husband because he could have revealed what they had done to the king, so she had to also lie. Everyone had to leave because Lady Macbeth made them to cover Macbeth’s lie. When Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost, it reminds him of the crime he committed and what he made two other people
After the death of Banquo, the guilty conscience caught up with Macbeth. Macbeth had his Kinsmen do the deed and go after Banquo and his kids, decapitating Banquo.Shortly after the death of Banquo, Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost sitting in his place at the dinner table. “I am in blood stepp'd in so far, that, should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o'er.” ( Macbeth, Act iii, scene iv)
God and the devil have a strong presence in “Macbeth”. The characters look to heaven and hell as places they have to try and strive towards or steer away from. God and the devil seem to be the driving and obvious force behind the happenings of the tragedy. They mold the characters into what they are. Even when things do not end up in their favor. The witches have an impact on the whole theme of the play. They are the ones who start to label Macbeth with titles, which he does not yet posses. The witches predict the future, which is to Macbeth’s liking. “All hail Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis. All hail Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor. All hail Macbeth, that’s shalt be king hereafter!”(1.3.46-48). Macbeth at this time was only the Thane of Glamis and he knew he had aspirations of becoming king, but wanted to know how these witches would know to say such things. “…tell me more…But how of Cawdor? The thane of Cawdor lives, a prosperous gentleman, and to be king stands not within the prospect of belief.” (1.3.68-73) The witches at this point fade out and leave Banquo and Macbeth to speculate. Ross and Angus enter and tell Macbeth that that the Thane of Cawdor is going to be executed and that Macbeth will take on the title. In Macbeth’s mind this means that he is going to be king. Since the witches were able to predict that he was going to be Thane of Cawdor then he believes he is definitely going to be king. “What can the devil speak true?”(1.3.107) This is Banquo’s reaction after Ross “hails” Macbeth with his new title, Thane of Cawdor. Banquo starts to wonder if what the witches proclaimed, would actually come true. If what they said did come true for him it would mean his children would be kings. This quote is sort of strange to me. I am taking it as he refers to the witches as the devil. I don’t know how he came to this conclusion; maybe it is just how he is trained to think towards anyone that can see the future. The witches planted this thought into Macbeth’s head about being king. Since the Cawdor topic came true with ease he believes that him becoming king will also be an easy transition.
The play is about a man called Macbeth who on his journey home meets three witches who for tell his future as first becoming thane of Cawdor and, later king. Macbeth instantly sercomes to the witches and believes what the witches say. When Duncan announces is successor as his son Malcolm is dream of becoming king through honesty are dashed. Lady Macbeth quickly comes up with a plan to make Macbeth king, by killing king Duncan and making his son Malcolm flee in hope to save his own life. The plan is followed through Duncan dies and Malcolm flees for his life leaving Macbeth as king. But the guilt is too much and he soon starts to see the goast of King Duncan, meanwhile his wife goes insane with guilt and kills herself.
The play Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare. This play tells of betrayal, temptations, ambitions, murder, treason and manipulation. The readers feels sympathetic for MacBeth, as he is stuck in the middle of a situation he can’t get out of. However, sympathy is lost when MacBeth commits evil deeds that he is only responsible for. Macbeth is only persuaded to commit treason, but due to his paranoia he kills many more people. The main focus is Macbeth, being the unfortunate victim, from the 3 evil witches to Lady Macbeth. His downfall is caused by other people around him.
Within the pages of the play Macbeth, one can find the five distinct literary devices of symbolism, allusion, alliteration, personification, and repetition used throughout. These three devices aid the story along and help develop the plot and characters each in a different way.
Following this murder, Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost at the banquet. He is filled with feelings of regret and, as a result of his troubled mind, sees Banquo's ghost.
The story of Macbeth is filled with murder, guilt, and stress. All of which causes tragedy in the play. The “dagger scene,” the “banquet scene” and the “sleep walking scene” are all important scenes of the play. The scenes display how stress can affect the human mind causing hallucinations and sleepwalking. Due to their sins, their consequences were heavy. Macbeth saw a floating dagger and a ghost, while Lady Macbeth would sleepwalk.
A Shakespearean tragic hero may be defined as “an exceptional being of high degree” who contributes to his own degeneration and illustrates a personality flaw. The character of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is in all ways the perfect example of a tragic hero. His greatness and bravery in battle for his country ultimately leads him to be a great thane and eventually a powerful king, making his actions have a significant impact on a country. Macbeth’s ambition on becoming a king leads to an obsession to remain in his current position. His ambition comes to a point where he falls to the temptation of evil which leads to Macbeth’s inevitable downfall. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is portrayed as a brave man whose performance in Scotland’s battle is celebrated.
As the day was just started to rise and wake up from its nap, the day had come for the big coronation dinner and where something unexpected was going to occur. As the day pass and the time had come for the big celebrating and everyone was already, including Lennox, Ross, and Lady Macbeth had taking their place and settle in the big palace dining room hall. Where, Macbeth had arrived late to the coronation dinner! And Lennox had greeted him Macbeth, as “Oh, come my brother! You have decided to join us to eat? Take a seat, please.” Therefore, this had cause Macbeth to be a little embrace, because he had arrived late and they were just waiting for him. This where Macbeth spoke and responding, “Of, course! How could I miss a big coronation dinner that’s in my honor, my old pawl.” This was going back and back conversation between Lennox and Macbeth, and Ross had spoked; who already had arrived and was all settle, said “Plenty of the chit-chatting!
In Act 3, Scene 4 of Macbeth we are able to identify the disintegration of both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s characters in the overwrought scene. Throughout this scene Shakespeare uses a range of techniques to present their conflicting characters, creating dramatic tension. From the darkness of Banquo’s murder in the previous scene, there is a sudden tonal shift, as the scene abruptly changes to the bustle of the banqueting hall. The “Banquet Scene” is one of the most engaging scenes as it may be considered to be the pivotal point of the play. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth need the banquet to be a success as this is the first time they will be presenting themselves as monarchs and the rightful successors to the throne before society. However, this creates a sense of fundamental irony as the audience is aware that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are illegitimate figures and falsely usurped the crown. There is also a sense of comic relief as Macbeth publicly humiliates himself when he is confronted supernaturally by his sins. It is interesting to observe the changes within the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and their shifting relationship after the appearance of Banquo’s ghost.
