Joseph Campbell once said “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” This quotes talks about how in order to be a hero, you have to care about other people. It really emphasizes that you cannot be a true hero if you only care about yourself. All traits and functions that people would consider heroic involve others, not just themselves. There are so many heroic traits out there, but 3 are very important. A true hero is courageous, will rescue others in need, and does not look down on people who are not privileged. The ability to show courage is very important to be a hero. To clarify, a hero does not think that people who are poor or live in poverty are inferior, and a hero definitely does not think that these people have no chance in life. Most people do not pay much attention to refugees living in America. However, this is not the case with Luma Mufleh, who created a school for refugees to help them be successful in life. In the article “Refugee kids find hope on the soccer field and in the classroom” by Natalie Angley from CNN News, Luma Mufleh proves that she is a hero by truly caring about these kids. As an example of this, she states, “I try to protect my kids when I can; I don’t want them to see any more hatred and ignorance then what they have already experienced” (cnn.com). Luna was talking about the students at the school for refugees that she created. This is just one quote proves that she is a hero in many ways. One thing she did was call the refugees her kids. The fact that she actually considers these refugees her kids proves that she really does care about these people, and she wants them to be as successful as possible. This mother and kid relationship is extremely important for these kids who have gone through so much in their lives. In conclusion, Luma is a hero because she does not stand by while others need help, and she does not look down on people who live in poverty. She is a great example of what a true hero should be, and how a hero will not look down on people that are not very
