The quote “all’s fair in love and war” means nothing is out of bounds when it comes to love and war; everything is fair game. Nicholas Sparks, Norman Rockwell, and Robert Frost do an excellent job depicting this quote in their work. Nicholas Sparks is famous for his romantic novels; many of which involve a man in the military falling in love with a woman and doing whatever it takes to be with one another. Norman Rockwell’s paintings are simple but also show the love and war. Though Robert Frost’s poem are not particularly about love and war; he does have many poems about love between two people as well as poems about war and what it takes to survive. All three people are extremely talented and I enjoy all of their work.
Nicholas Sparks was born on December 31, 1965 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was the second of three children to Patrick Sparks and Jill Thoene. Patrick was a college professor, who was finishing up graduate work, and Jill was a homemaker. Since Patrick was just finishing school and Jill didn’t work, the Sparks family had little money and most of Nicholas’s childhood was spent moving around to Minnesota, Los Angeles, Grand Island, Nebraska, and finally Fair Oaks, California where the family found a permanent home. Nicholas went on to graduate from Belle Vista High School in 1984, becoming the class valedictorian.
He then attended the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, which had offered him a full track scholarship. During his freshman year of college, Sparks was a part of the relay team that set a school record that still stands today but it did not end on a good note. Nicholas got an Achilles tendon injury that forced him to spend the summer not doing much of anything but recuperating.

Though Sparks is well known for his romantic novels, writing isn’t all he does. He developed a $1.5 million scholarship, and an internship fund for the creative writing department with his old university. He also kept his connection with track and field since his oldest son, Miles, competes in the sport. Sparks now coaches the local high school team and serves on the USA Track and Field Foundation's board of directors. Nicholas is still happily married to Cathy and together they have five children: Miles, Ryan, Lexie, Landon, and Savannah. The Sparks family now lives in New Bern, North Carolina; where Nicholas continues to write.

Paul Nash, a World War I artist, invokes similar images in his paintings We are Making a New World and The Ypres Salient at Night. Guilaume Apollinaire’s writes about the beautiful atrocity that is war in his poem “Gala.”

The boys either eagerly awaited the draft, enlisted in the area of war they wanted, or did not want to go at all. The students at the school created new activities for enjoyment since the customary past times could not be played due to a lack of materials. When a friend "returns" from the war, the boys at Devon got a real sense of what the war was like. The boys learned that going to war was not all fun and games like they had anticipated. The influence World War II had on the characters in A Separate Peace and on life at the Devon School was clearly depicted through their actions and activities.
Life can change in the blink of an eye. Nicholas Sparks tells the life of a young couple with many struggles in his book, At First Sight, which was published in 2005 by Grand Central Publishing. This is a fictional love story that can be read by any young adult. This novel can be compared to The Wedding, which is another Nicholas Sparks book. These two books are similar because each book is character-driven and has a twisted end. At First Sight is a successful book because it strongly describes the setting, goes in depth with the events, and keeps the readers guessing.

The astonishing book, the Wednesday Wars, takes place in Kentucky in the 1960’s during the time of the Vietnam War. The United States has been involved in many wars since its inception. WWII in particular had a significant impact on the world and the United States. Through the years 1939 to 1945 the majority of the world suffered many tragedies and hardships. In total, 50 million people died including women, children, civilians, and innocent bystanders. Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany, was responsible for a significant amount of these deaths. Hitler, aligned with Japan, wanted to seize all of Europe and Japan wanted to conquer Asia. A major cause of WWII was that Germany strongly disapproved of the Treaty of Versailles. Germany especially didn’t like that they had to accept all the blame for WWI, paying $ 6,600 million for the damage they caused in WWI, and they were only allowed to have a small army and six naval ships, no tanks, no air force and no submarines were allowed. Also, the Rhineland area was to be de-militarized and taken out of Germany’s possession. All of these conditions were written in the Treaty of Versailles. During the war the world formed two sides, the Allies and the Axis Powers. The Allies included Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States, known as “the Big 3”. The Axis Powers included Germany, Italy, and Japan. At the end of the war the Allies were triumphant and the world gained its peace.
The just war theory is described by Thomas Massaro in his book Living Justice as the “principle that warfare might be justified under certain conditions” (108). The complexities involved with international relations makes determining a just war very difficult. Even though historically pacifism hasn’t gained much traction within Catholic circles, it currently is gaining popularity with many mainstream Catholics. With so many differing views on military action, one might ask, “What determines a just war? How can we balance the need for peace with self-defense?” An examination of criteria for a just war and critiques written on this topic might shed light on these two questions.
In my opinion, this novel was a very romantic, and happy love story and overall an wonderful novel. I loved all the plot twists throughout the story. I believe Sparks did an amazing job writing this story. He managed to make the reader laugh, cry, and smile all in a matter of a few pages. The story line is intriguing and very relatable to the dreams of young girls. It allows the reader to imagine the love connection between Allie and Noah and makes them enjoy hearing about their journey together as a
The Vietnam War was a major war that occurred from 1959 to 1975 partially as a result from the Geneva Accords between the ARVN, lead by the Ho Chi Minh, and the NVA. This war started when the U.S wanted to prevent the spread of communism in Vietnam with the help of South Vietnam. In other words, the U.S government wanted to prevent a domino effect of communism that would spread to many neighboring countries. However, the public did not agree with the government and there were many protests across the U.S. After the Vietnam War ended, both the U.S and Vietnam were distraught by all the anarchy that occurred during the 16 years of war. Many foreign relations were cut in half, politics in both America and Vietnam were changed, the people of both countries were changed forever, and economies were crippled as a result from the Vietnam War.
The Thirty Years War was a series of conflicts, not-knowingly involving most European countries from 1618 to 1648. The war, which was fought mainly in Germany, was started when Bohemian Protestants furiously attacked the Holy Roman Emperor in terms to impose a restriction on their religious and civil liberties. By understanding the Thirty Years War, you will notice the notable religious, political and social changes. The changes paved the religious and political maps of Europe. Not only did this war affect the religious and political demographic, it caused populations to perish and lose large amounts of their goods. What was known as a religious battle, turned out to be a political feud in competition of which state has the greater power affecting men, women, soldiers and civilians. “[The bohemians] had no idea that their violent deed would set off a chain reaction of armed conflict that would last thirty years and later be called Europe’s “first world war” of the modern era.” When the war ended, the lands were defiled and over 5 million people were killed.

War has been around for centuries. From the time modern civilizations began, war has played an integral part in human history. It shaped the world into the modern world we live in. War has been said to be a great motivator, for example, the Great Wall of China was built to fend off the attackers from the north. However, the negative aspects of war far outweighs any positive effects it might have. The destruction of civilizations, cities and countries, mass killings of men, woman and children alike, the disastrous effect it has on economy and the after effects of war can last for centuries.
