To establish the degree to which the city of Los Angeles can be considered sustainable, I
selected the Egan Wheel, shown below, as the basis for analysis. Sustainability is defined as “the
ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs” (United Nations). In contrast to solely environmental sustainability, I
chose to focus on a more comprehensive sustainability that includes all aspects of society. To be
truly sustainable, a community must “efficiently use natural resources, enhance the environment,
strengthen economic prosperity, as well as promote social cohesion” (United Nations).
Therefore, the Egan Wheel, shown below, serves as an outline for my research.

environmental, equity, economy, housing and the built environment, and social and cultural;
each section describes the ideal sustainable approach to its aspects.
In order to quantitatively examine each sector based on a qualitative description, I
utilized factual data as well as an opinion based survey that I conducted in Los Angeles. To
obtain adequate results for my survey, I recruited four classmates and divided the 18 question
survey into three smaller surveys. We surveyed in The Grove as well as the Los Angeles County
Museum of Art in L.A., selecting participants at random to answer six questions each. These

Sustainability is one of the most controversial topics throughout the history, and as our society develop, we realize that being able to be sustainable is essential to survival of our race. The book Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Sustainability is a collection of articles on different side of various issues related to sustainability. In the book, Issue 8 discusses the ability of technology to deliver sustainability, and issue 16 and 17 discusses the sustainability of food and energy. While issue 16 and 17 are well-presented, the arguments in issue 8 are not very strong.

My survey was open to anyone who was above the age of 18 because the topic of eating out can apply to almost everyone regardless of certain demographics. In a world where over half of the human population calls a city their home, the need to restructure and revolutionize the way we design our urban environments has never been greater. Currently, the notion that these vast metropolises of metal, concrete, and sludge could one day be fully realized pillars of sustainability is certainly laughable. I consider it’s not very appropriate to say “sustainable X” because these “X”s are only sub-systems which exchange energy and materials within a larger overall system. Before beginning my survey, I had some preconceived notions about the types of answers that I would obtain. I decided to survey ten college students. I included five male and five female subjects in my survey to be equitable as well as to determine preferences based upon gender in my results. I surveyed two of my male roommates and one female roommate. The remaining participants were random friends who visited our house. This was an easy and effective way to conduct my surveys. Having so many roommates means there are always a variety of people who come and go from our residence. Although this was a simple way to conduct my survey, I was not certain that it would be an accurate sampling.
