What does a plant mean to you? Does it mean family? Well in the drama A Raisin in the Sun written by Lorraine Hansberry that is exactly what Mama’s plant represents. There is symbolism in A Raisin in the Sun. Symbolism is a symbol of literature that gives an object or idea that has a representation beyond the literal meaning of the object. Symbols add meaning to the text and underline some subtle point the author is making. For instance, there is a plant in the book A Raisin in the Sun. A special, little, frail weak plant. This plant is kind of like the Younger family. Mama is the one who nurtures and takes care of the plant. Much like she does in her family. In the drama “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry. There is a African American family in their South side of Chicago. These people are in the 1930’s where there is really nothing a black man can do. Everyone still had the stereotype that African Americans were meant for working in the fields. So, one can assume that they are a poor family with only dreams. Instead of representing working, the plant represents opportunity. “Lord, if this little old plant don't get more sun that it's been getting it ain't never going to see spring again.” (1.1, 40) This is showing the plant doesn't have the opportunity to get enough sun light. This is changed from the plant from being weak but working hard to survive… to the opportunity it’s given to be healthy. Much like the Younger family. Their color and money restricts them. Restricts them from being able to be happy and grow as a healthy family. This relates to the plant, because it doesn't have the opportunity to grow as other plants do. Much like the Youngers don't have the opportunity to be a happy healthy
