Lord of the Flies Character Analysis
William Golding’s book, Lord of the flies, begins with the central character stuck in a jungle of which he knows little about. Ralph as we later find out his name, is the athletic, level-headed, leader of the boys on the island. He is the emotional leader of the group, and he has a major influence on all of the other characters. Ralph is used as a sort of reminder of the old world. He reminds the boys that there are laws and rules and everyone must abide for survival. When the boys realize that they are not at home anymore and they being to rely on their natural instincts they lose the society that man-kind has created. Ralph is trying hard to keep the boys together because he knows if they are not the chances of being rescued become lesser.
Ralph’s main motivation is to go home. Everything that the boys do on the island is somehow directed at finally going home. They set up a system so that the fire is always burning in case a ship goes by. When the boys let the fire go out and a ship actually does go by Ralph is deeply affected. He vows to keep the fire going through the night from this point on to make sure that next time they will be rescued. When this happens a certain decline happens as well in the book. Jacks rise begins at this point. Jack is beginning to think that they will not be rescued. When Jack begins to break away from the group that Ralph leads. Ralph always optimistic that they will be rescued and Jack sees this as a sign of weakness hence Jack leaves the group. Ralph has many key attributes but optimism and courage are the things that stand out most.
They way that Ralph talks about his father throughout the novel shows what respect he has for him. It also shows what kind of person he would seem to be outside of this island. His father being a naval officer obviously had a great impact on Ralph’s life and it shows through the way he speaks of him. (pg.13) “He’s a commander in the Navy. When he gets leave he’ll come and rescue us.” This is one of the many examples of how much respect he has for his father.
That’s why if I had to pick between Ralph and Jack it would be Ralph because he is a caring person. Ralph overall really tried his best to be together as a team and a family. So the point of this is to tell you that Ralphs motivation was to find help to get off the island he wanted to keep people safe so that they would all help and comfort each other. The tragedies were hard but Ralph did contribute even when he was upset he still showed effort. Oh and all the deaths Ralph was speechless he could not have prevented it even if he wanted to and we know he really wanted to.
The reaction and effectiveness of this poster might have been different in today’s society because Americans take full advantage of carpooling. The creation of Uber and Lyft are methods Americans use to carpool. This poster marked the beginning of a new tradition in American culture. Carpooling since 1945 has been a method to save gas and money. Overall during my analysis, I was able to put myself in the mindset of an American citizen during this time period. This paper will be focusing on the courts as the specific sub-system in the criminal justice system. As said in the book the court system is responsible for charging criminal suspects, carrying out trials, and sentencing a person convicted of a crime. The fear of crime influences criminal justice policies in the court system. One way it does this is with the courts sentencing. Courts are able to give out severe punishments as a method of deterrence. This specific type of deterrence would be general deterrence. The book says that general deterrence theory should work if the punishment is clear, severe, and done swiftly. Kay’s argument talks about the rideshare service “Uber” and how they are taking over the taxi industry. Weaknesses found in Kay’s article is when he makes Uber look bad when talking about their flashy and innovative app, which seems like he is promoting it and with a little more research, Kay can find other apps that are similar to Uber. He sounds tongue-in-cheek when writing it. Secondly, Kay is lacking evidence to support what he is trying to say in his article because his points are too weak and basic. Finally, this article left the reader wondering what is he really trying to prove in his argument about Uber since he seems to be all over the place with his arguments. Ralph’s power at the beginning is secure but as the group succumbs to their savage instincts, Ralph’s influence declines as Jack’s rises. This is due mainly to the cruelty and violence that goes on in the story. This cruelty reveals that Ralph’s commitment to civilization and being rescued is so strong that he will not allow himself to change his morals and become cruel like the others. The cruelty in this novel also shows that Ralph is a very intelligent character. His intelligence can be proven because there was a point in the novel when he hunts a boar for the first time and he experiences the thrill of bloodlust. He also attends one of Jack’s feast where he is swept away by the frenzy and participates in the killing of Simon. This is a very tragic moment for Ralph because this is when he realizes the evil that lives within himself and every human being. It is the cruel acts that happen in this novel that reveals Ralph’s character of being intelligent and being able to think deeply about human experiences. Having to support your parents for an unknown about of time is a huge obligation. Many Chinese families are in massive amounts of debt and adding another child to that is simply not possible. The Chinese government saw a problem but tried to fix it the wrong way. They have succeeded in controlling their population but in hindsight they have created a problem much more problematic to the Chinese culture. Having way more men than women is only going to cause sex trafficking, selling of brides, and prostitution rates to rises. Homosexuality may even become more accepted in Chinese culture as an end result to the huge gender imbalance. China will never be the same and the worst is yet to come.

... Ralph has proven to have a much better understanding of people and their needs and this makes him a much better leader than Jack. With Ralph's understanding of the need for order and rules, he improves the condition where the boys are living in. Jack's condition was horrible. Also, Jack treated the boys very badly and like he better. Ralph, on the other hand treated the boys all equally and with respect. Ralph's priority to get off the island shows his wisdom and ability to make good decisions. Although Jack was popular on the island for the short amount of time the boys were there, he would not have been popular for much longer. He does not have any of the qualities that a good leader should have and turned himself and the rest of the boys into complete losers. Jack's plan would have soon faded but if Ralph had become leader, his wisdom would last much longer.

Ralph shows that he has a better understanding of the boys than Jack. He knows that the boys need some sort of order on the island in order for them to survive. He starts a simple form of government and sets a few rules for them. Even though they don’t last very long, the fact that he tried to help the group is what makes him a better leader. Ralph’s wisdom and ability to look toward the future also has an advantage over Jack. He has a sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. When the fire goes out, Ralph gets upset because the chance to be rescued was gone as well. Ralph enforces his role of leadership as he gives the boys a sense of stability of an authority figure. He keeps the boys in pretty good order at the meeting by making a rule that they can only speak if they have the conch. Ralph knows that the littleuns are afraid and they need shelter to feel more secure. They work together for a while, but as the time goes on the smaller boys want to go play. They slowly lose all their help until Simon and Ralph are the only ones left to work on them. Ralph knows that this is a necessity and keeps bringing it up at the meetings. Jack, on the other hand, is doing nothing but causing chaos.
Ralph is shown as an overall good character who leads the boys in times of desperate measures. Goulding chooses to depict Ralph as a good character though these actions. Rarely does Golding show the evil side of Ralph. We see him building shelters for the kids on the island. He barely even knows these kids and is helping them while they lounge and eat Golding also shows him as the leader of the group who helps create order and maintain leadership. At a meeting of the boys Ralph suggested, “‘give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking”’ (Golding 50). These ground rules help to keep order and show Ralph is doing what he can to help the boys get off the island. As a meeting was taking place Ralph suggests, “‘A fire. Make a fire”’ (Golding 38). This is what kept the idea of survival in his eyes lit. He was intrigued by the idea; which kept a sense of survival close. Golding mainly reveals the good in Ralph which is why there are so many actions to support his moral value. He can also be viewed as evil through few of his actions. (Oldsey)
