The concept that George R. R Martin is discussing is a concept that is greatly similar to that of Lord of the Flies’, a novel by William Golding. The novel discusses how a group of young English boys are stranded on a deserted island after their plane was shot down, and they try to figure out how to survive until they are rescued. Golding demonstrates how humans, when free of society’s rules, allow their capacity for evil to dominate their existence, through the use of symbols such as the pig’s head, the beast, and clay masks.
One of the most important symbols in Lord of the Flies is the pig's head. The pig's head is described by Golding as "dim-eyed, grinning faintly, blood blackening between the teeth," and is covered with a "black blob of flies.” (p. 137-138). Golding uses the pig’s head to personify the evil within the boys. This is shown mainly when Simon has a conversation with the pig in his own conscious and imagines the pig saying, "Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill! Oh you knew, didn't you? I'm part of you?" (p. 143). After Simon wakes up and sees that what the boys thought was beast is actually a dead body of an airman in a parachute, he attempts to tell the boys about his new discovery. Although, when he arrived, the boys attack and bludgeon him to death. That shows how after the boys start to exist without society’s rules, they allow evil to control and dominate their actions and become savages.

Through the novel, Golding has shown a truly amazing glimpse into human nature. In the end, human beings are thirsty for power, and will stop at nothing to be powerful. And the most amazing thing is, even children are not immune to evil.

That symbol represents the evil within the boys because that is a symbol of a violent death of a pig. It represents how Simon saw how people thought it was the beast but really the idea of the beast was inside all of them and the evil they thought was in the island was inside everyone. Lord of the Flies has several themes that are the key to understanding of literature. Three of the themes of this novel are the fear, courage and lastly survival. Fear has been surrounded throughout the entire novel. With the amount of fear because of an apparent beast, many of the people on the island have changed. Most of the boys have become more violent throughout the novel and have no sense of direction as what to do next. Jack was one of those people who had changed majorly throughout the novel. Courage is one of the most important things to have mentally and physically when you’re stuck in an unknown island. Ralph’s courage in the book became strong when he had lost two of his close companions in Simon and Piggy. Survival is the best theme in this novel simply because of the lack of tools and the laziness of the people throughout the book. These themes show how great and wonderful this book is, and if you read it thoroughly, you will understand the perils and the adventure of Ralph, Jack and the rest of the boys in Lord of the Flies.
All of the boys but Simon are becoming the beast at that moment. In Lord of the Flies, Golding proves that fear draws out man’s inner evil and barbarism. Within the novel, Golding uses characterization of the boys and symbolism of the beast to show the gradual change from their initial civility to savagery and inhumanity. These influences cause for mental changes in the brain. Most of the time, mental changes affect physical changes. However, in some rare occasions it is the other way around. While on the island the boys go through numerous physical and mental changes. Although mental changes are somewhat more significant than physical changes, physical changes are still very much apparent and can sometimes cause for mental change.
The novel Lord of the Flies was full of challenges that the boys overcame in order to survive. Conflicts within themselves, with nature and with each other constantly test the children’s ability to endure. Struggles against the natural elements of the island, rival groups or fear of the unknown continually appear throughout the story. Some of the boys on the island did not survive the quarrels that they faced. They perished because they were lacking something that the surviving boys did not. The survivors had a natural primal instinct or a physical or mental advantage over the boys who did not make it. ‘Only the strong survive’ is an important element that runs through the novel Lord of the Flies because in order to survive the boys must turn to their primitive instincts of physical strength and savagery.
Human nature has been debated for centuries, everyone coming up with their own theories, pulling their sources from religious texts, wars, experiments, or daily life. William Golding and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, born in very different times and countries were very opposite in their views compared to one another. William Golding believed that human nature was immoral and evil, and there has been evidence of this all the way to the beginning of human society. Without laws or moral boundaries, humans would plunder, steal, and murder to their hearts content, delighting in their new found freedom to let go of social philosophies imposed upon them. Rousseau, however, believed that human nature was naturally just and moral, and it was society’s laws that made them immoral. Social norms and laws create limitation and superfluous need, and it is within those boundaries that humans become enslaved to “moral inequality.” Without laws and social norms, humans will revert back to their natural goodness. It is the polar opposite of Golding’s belief. Golding’s philosophy, however, is more in line to my own, as in my opinion, Rousseau’s belief is a rather naïve outlook on life.
The book I am doing my report on is Lord of the flies, by William Golding and published by Perigee. This book shows the clash between the human drive towards brutality and the opposite, civilization. All around the novel, the clash is performed by the problem between Ralph and Jack, who individually speak to civilization and viciousness. The varying belief systems are communicated by every kid's different state of mind towards power. I feel that Lord of the Flies is a good book because it reveals to you that every man has the ability to be vicious, that evil is just controlled by the guidelines of society, and that once there are no rules the evil comes free and individuals get to be savages and can turn on their best friends.
One of the most important and most obvious symbols in Lord of the Flies is the object that gives the novel its name, the pig's head. Golding's description of the slaughtered animal's head on a spear is very graphic and even frightening. The pig's head is depicted as "dim-eyed, grinning faintly, blood blackening between the teeth," and the "obscene thing" is covered with a "black blob of flies" that "tickled under his nostrils" (William Golding, Lord of the Flies, New York, Putnam Publishing Group, 1954, p. 137, 138). As a result of this detailed, striking image, the reader becomes aware of the great evil and darkness represented by the Lord of the Flies, and when Simon begins to converse with the seemingly inanimate, devil-like object, the source of that wickedness is revealed. Even though the conversation may be entirely a hallucination, Simon learns that the beast, which has long since frightened the other boys on the island, is not an external force. In fact, the head of the slain pig tells him, "Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill! Ö You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you?" (p. 143). That is to say, the evil, epitomized by the pig's head, that is causing the boys' island society to decline is that which is inherently present within man. At the end of this scene, the immense evil represented by this powerful symbol can once again be seen as Simon faints after looking into the wide mouth of the pig and seeing "blackness within, a blackness that spread" (p. 144).

In the novel, "Lord of the Flies," a group of British boys are left on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere. Throughout the novel, they have conflicts between civilization and savagery, good vs. evil, order vs. chaos, and reason vs. impulse. What would it be like if the boys were replaced by a group of girls? Would they behave the same way they did in the novel? I believe that the girls would act in the same behavior as the boys in all ways because, everyone is installed with evil inside them which is their natural instinct, also because in life there is always a power struggle in all manners, and the outcome with the girls would be similar-since both sexes would plan on getting rescued.
It is best represented in the boar’s head that the hunters proudly stick in the middle of the jungle. The head, or the Lord of the Flies, relates to the beast, which controls the fear and division of the two groups of boys on the island. Fear was a big point of conflict, and the boar is associated with it. The power it has over the boys makes them attempt every measure to keep themselves safe, even if it meant harming another boy. When the hunters find the boar they kill it and, “ Jack held up the head and jammed the soft throat down the pointed end of the stick which pierced through into the mouth... ‘ This head’s for the beast!’ ” (136-137). This action was very much for the beast they convinced themselves to believe in. It not only gave them fear that took control of them, but also an underlying feeling of evil and extreme violence inside of them. The boar, or “Lord of the Flies” even says this to Simon, “ ‘Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill... You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are what they are?” (143). The head is saying how the boys think the beast is something they can defeat physically. But, points out how the beast must be defeated mentally because they are the beast.
