Are Humans Inherently Good or Evil?

The very compelling question asks, “Are humans inherently good or evil?”. Yet responding to this question, there is no simple answer. Humans are inherently good because they are only taught to act immorally and if we were evil, we would not be who we are today. Because of the evidence I chose to illustrate these opinions and the events that have taken place in the novel, Lord of the Flies, humans are inherently good.

One example that shows humans are inherently good is a quote from Enlightenment philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. This quote shows that only civilization and the influence of others turns humans into beasts. He said that “Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains”. As actor Patton Oswalt said, “The vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak… We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We have eaten ourselves alive a long time ago”. What he is trying to make us understand is that the good in this world outnumber and outdo the evil. And, if we were evil in the early days of humanity, we would have eaten ourselves like savages. What can also be inferred from this quote is that the good will always beat the evil no matter what in any circumstance. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, Simon shows that signs of evil or savagery are not overcoming him. As a matter of fact, Simon acts very generously and kindly to the littluns. He gives them the ripest and cleanest fruit from the top of the tree, which represents his kindness to others and the good inside of
