Lope de Vega was born November 25, 1562. He died on August 27, 1635 he was 72. Nicknamed “The Phoenix of Wits” and “Master of Nature” because of the volume of his work. Lope renewed the Spanish theatre at a time it started to become a mass cultural phenomenon. He was a Spanish play right, poet, novelist, and marine. His reputation in the Spanish world is the second to that of Cervantes. The volume of his output is unequalled making him most prolific author in the history of literature.

Lope stated that plays about el honor pleased playgoers. At that time in Spain custom required women to guard the family honor according to a complex set of rules. On stage honor was presented as something to be cherished as life itself. Most of the upper classes claimed exclusive possession of honor but Lope ascribed it to the common man. In 1614 Lope became a priest. However he contributed to carry on his affairs with the actress Lucia de Salcedo. By then a tyrannous feudal lord is murdered by villagers who refuse to confess and are eventually spared by intervention of the king. For several years Lope de Vega divided his life between his two families and several lovers. He worked very hard to keep them all happy, during that time he wrote a lot of plays and poems to make money. They were published several times without him knowing or correcting them. At age 38 he finally he was finally able to go over his work and correct them. In 1605 he started to work for the Duke of Sessa until he joined the oratory in Olivar Street in 1610.

Lope went through a deep crisis after the death of some close relatives. He turned more and more into priesthood. However the works he wrote during this time have a deep meaning and inspiration. His favorite son Carlos Felix died in 1612 from a fever. Then Juana de Gardo one of his lovers died a year later in childbirth. All of these tragedies affected Lope and in 1612 he decided to be ordained as priest. Priesthood didn’t stop Lope from his advances or the Duke of Sessa fearful of losing his secretary provided him with women
