What does long-term athlete development mean to you? Well, in this paper I am going to talk about long-term athlete development. Long- term athlete development is “A clear path to better sport, greater health, and higher achievement” (Sports for Life). You are going to learn the ways first of what long-term athlete development is, how it is going to impact my job and finally, an example of a movement that you can development over time. If you were asking yourself what is long-term athlete development is, then today you’re going to learn about it. There are a many steps and a long process to overcome if your want to be the best athlete possible. There are seven stages that the athlete must pass to become a great athlete. You have to introduce them to unstructured play times to see their movement skills and fundamental and basic sport skills. Stage two is called fundamental. This stage should start for females 6-8 and males 6-9. The big things to work on are agility, balance, coordination and speed. Stage three is learning to train. For for females this should occur around age 8-11 and for males 9-12. This stage is the golden age for learning sports. This is where the athlete should move from fundamental movement skills into fundamental sport skills. Stage four is called “to train to train”. This should occur for females around age 11-15 and for males 12-16. The athlete needs to start building on everything they have learned over the years and start focusing on strength and the anaerobic develop. Stage five is called “train to compete”. For females, this should occur around age 15-21 and for males around age 16-23. In this stage the athlete must pick one sport that they want get better at and position in that sport. These athletes are aiming to compete in national events.
