Liz McCartney Changes Peoples Lives Each human being is different, many are kind and many are not, but there are only some people out there in the world that are more. Some take that one extra step that others cannot. A great example of someone who takes that extra step is Liz McCartney. This young, bold women chose to accept things as they are, have faith, have hope, and has made a huge impact improving peoples lives. She helped disaster-stricken communities across the U.S. First, she was a native of Washington DC who served in the Peace Corps in Lesotho, South Africa and taught English as a second language and middle school. In 2006 McCartney and Zack Rosenburg, her boyfriend started volunteering in the St. Bernard Parish after Hurricane Katrina hit because they were haunted by images of the storm's destruction and stories of people.. Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29, 2005 and struck the Gulf Coast of the United States. Hitting category 3 and sustaining winds of 100-140 miles per hour, this storm itself did a great amount of damage, but the aftermath was catastrophic. Bernard Project (SBP). A non-profit organization starting in March 2006 to rebuild homes for people who lost them due to Hurricane Katrina. SBP is leading the long-term recovery of damaged neighborhoods by rebuilding, sharing models and ideas with other groups and advising local and state elected officials on how best to structure the recovery. SBP serves low-to moderate-income residents with a special focus on families with small children, the elderly, disabled persons, war veterans and the under and uninsured.
