The Education of Little Tree is about a Cherokee boy who is given to the care of his half Cherokee “Granpa” and Cherokee “Granma.” The Cherokee boy, Little Tree, has many struggles throughout the movie - his parents die, he is taken away from his grandparents and they soon die towards the end of the movie. Although Little Tree encounters many obstacles, he still manages to stay true to his Cherokee heritage. The Education of Little Tree is a sweet and loving movie about family. A film of Cherokee grandparents taking in their grandson and teaching him the ways of the Cherokee Tribe. Little Tree’s grandparents wanted to teach him to be a strong and independent young man. Although, living the life of the Cherokee isn’t exactly a luxurious life. Because of money issues, Little Tree’s grandfather is a bootlegger of illegal whiskey. He begins to tell Little Tree that this business has been in their family since he was a little boy. She wanted to teach Little Tree morals and manners, as well as the basics of general education. But, because Little Tree was taken away from his crude Aunt, she was out for revenge. Little Tree’s Aunt found out that he wasn’t going to a government funded school, which by law, he was supposed to. Because of this, the local government took him away to a government school. This school completely turns Little Tree from a cherokee boy to a white english boy. The headmaster even changes his name to Joshua. In this school, “Joshua” is supposed to learn the ways of the white people and forget his Cherokee ways. But, Little Tree has a thicker skull than that. Little Tree’s grandfather soon shows up outside of the school’s gates in the middle of the night and breaks Little Tree out. This is an act of love and
