At the beginning, we don’t like the grandmother very much, but towards the end we realise that she has had many hardships in her life and she just wants things to be orderly and live the life she used to have. Authors in the 1900s created short stories by writing short books that they could sell for quick cash. This is how the genre of short stories came about. As more and more stories were published, shorts became very popular because they were so short. Many people loved the idea that they could finish an entire story in one sitting. As the stories became more popular, Kurt Vonnegut, a short story writer, developed a list of 8 rules that make a perfect short story. He executes his rules in his short stories giving many examples of what the standard for short story writing should be.
Elements that make for the best literary short story are character, meaning, tone and tension. These four literary elements make your story have a plot. These elements also contribute to your story’s purpose and ambition. The short stories we have read this semester integrate these elements, making successful and literary filled works.
Which is better, the ‘Classic’ or the ‘Modern’ novel? After reading the classic novel, ‘Lord of the flies’ and the Modern novel, The Hunger Games, it is clear that the classic novel won the battle between old and new. Lord of the Flies, written by William Goulding is a novel about a young group of school boys who’s plane was shot down over a deserted island and they must try to survive. The boys are free from the rules of society and the instinct to work toward civilisation and order slowly defends into savagery, violence and chaos. The Novel, The Hunger Games by Susanne Collins is an action packed story of Katniss Everdeen who is forced to take police in the violent Hunger Games. Katniss must endure many deadly situations, learn to control how she is perceived and manage complex relationships in order to survive in the games. The major theme of innocence and the main characters of these novels where compared in order to justify which novel was better.
In “The Lottery,” Mrs. Hutchinson says, “`It isn’t fair,’ she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head” (Jackson 7). Mrs. Hutchinson does not even try to get away, she only stands there and lets the townspeople kill her. She does not try to stand up to her society at all and she shows how she does not even try to change her fate. She only stands still and does not try to get away. Though these stories both have a female protagonist, The Hunger Games has a protagonist who stands up to her society in time to save herself. In The Hunger Games, the main character, Katniss, is one of the two participants still alive at the end of The Hunger Games. She and her fellow district mate, Peeta Mellark, are both still alive. The government says only one of them may win. Katniss convinces Peeta to eat deadly berries. They are just about to eat the berries when they are both declared the winners. Katnisss is reacting to the rule change. She is showing how she is not going to stand by and let the government control her. Katniss shows people should stand up for what they believe in and to not give into their society and to not be controlled. Both of the stories have a female protagonist differing how and when they stand up for themselves.
What qualities make a short story short? Well, as stated above by, Behnam Mirzababazadeh Fomeshi, a short story is called short because it is not as long, in the number of pages, and therefore tends to focus on a contained story. Why is this, personally this is due to keeping the reader’s attention and to provide/cram as little detail, that may not be necessary.

A Tale of Two Cities was written during the Victorian Era, while The Hunger Games was written in the year 2008. One could learn that people during the Victorian Era were more independent than the people of the present due to the fact that Carton works in secret without any help while Katniss has a mentor helping her throughout the story. Another aspect that could be learned is the difference between the audiences of the two novels. The Hunger Games, was written towards young adults, which is why the novel has a happy ending. On the other hand, A Tale Of Two Cities was written for adults in the middle and lower class, which is evident in the fact that the hero of the novel did not
Writing a story is pretty difficult. Writing a short story is even harder, there is so much that has to be accomplished; in both commercial and literary fiction! The plot, the structure, whether it has a happy, unhappy, or indeterminate ending. There must be artistic unity, chance, coincidence, rising action, climax, falling action. Most importantly there must be characterization. Characters make the story! “anyone can summarize what a person in a story has done, but a writer needs considerable skill and insight into human beings to describe convincingly who a person is” [page 168]

Entertainment can come and be enjoyed in many different forms. Television shows and movies are some of the different forms of entertainment can be in. The lives of famous actors from shows or movies are constantly scrutinized on and off screen. Within the world of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins a version of reality entertainment is the televised murder of innocent children. Those who are chosen to be within the Hunger Games become a scrutinized celebrity. Katniss and other tributes that are forced to fight and kill show how human identity can become lost as they become objectified for the people of Panem. The Hunger Games helps represent the harm that reality television can have by using the glorification of death with the objectification

To keep order and balance tradition, no matter how cruel and harsh must be followed. Sacrifice is beneficial to both of these stories because without sacrifice the characters would put their families in a bad situation unless they stepped up to the plate. Both The Hunger Games and The Lottery demonstrate that “The odds aren't always forever in there favor” (Collins).
The struggles both characters face demonstrate character development and contribute to the themes of the stories. Both short stories prove to be literally effective in that they disclose the main themes at the outset of each story. Although the themes may alter over the course of the stories, they are clearly defined in their respective introductions.
People always say that the book is better than the movie, and though they think they might be right, this isn't always the case. People like having the background knowledge of why a character is doing something in a specific case or why the events are happening and seeing the movie cut out all this extra information may upset them, but that doesn't mean that the book is better. It just means they're more informed reading the book. What is a bad movie? Not having enough information or just not being entertained. I happened to watch the movie before I read the book and I thought it was amazing, but after I read the book the movie just didn't compare to the book. Sure they had the same storyline but I was just more entertained reading the book. That doesn't mean that the movie suddenly wasn't as amazing, because it certainly was, it just means that the two different forms of art have their own unique way of being good. The Hunger Games, a story of 24 kids chosen at random to compete in a Game where they must fight to the death, can be told in different ways. Whereas the book is written in Katniss’ point of view, we get more in depth detail of Katniss’ thought process and characterization, in the film we lose the sense of what makes Katniss a hero, since it focuses more in the technological point of view and how it is used to control the citizens.
