Literacy Narrative: Key Issues In Education

Writing this literacy narrative I have discovered many key issues in education that I was never aware or never crossed my mind. Key issues in education are extremely important in today’s education. When I was writing this literacy narrative I learned many new writing and reading skills. In this literacy narrative helped my writing and reading improve a lot. I personally feel that writing this essay I was able to expand in my writing and reading skills allowing me to read and write on a higher level than I am use to. College has truly been such a huge change for me. During this literacy narrative one new technique that I learned was how to reading and annotation correctly. Other times I would read like three to four pages and my mind would just be completely blank and not understanding the point that the author is trying to make. Now that I have experienced summarizing readings in college I feel like I have learned the proper skills I need to summarize reading, I somewhat feel like I am semi pro at summarizing a reading now. During this literacy narrative project we starting using a skill that I personally really enjoy which, was reading and writing mindful practices. I truly believe that these new reading and writing mindful practices skill have truly impacted my reading and writing in various ways. Those ways are helping me maintance focus when I read and write and understanding what the author is talking about. Also now I really pay attention to little things like where I read and write, it has to be a nice quite place. Lastly, I now feel the need to sit up straight and focus on my breathing when I write and read. Another skill that I have develop during my time in this class is getting responses and revising them. At first I totally had no clue to do when it came to getting responses and revising, you can say I was somewhat lost. Now when I get responses I know exactly what to look

My literacy journey commenced at a young age. My story begins with the typical bed time stories and slowly progresses into complex novels. Some points in my literacy journey have made me admire the written word but other times literacy frustrated me. These ups and downs within my story have made me the person I am today. For many first year college students, the idea of sitting down in an English class and being asked to write an essay conjures up anxiety and stress from their high school experience. Many students bring a secret of reading and comprehension illiteracy with them to college. There is a shifting definition of literacy occurring in the United States with the advent of technology. School districts are assuming that the issue of reading will be addressed in the home and are leaving many students behind in reading goals. Many educators assume that when a student enters the first day of their English 1010 course that their reading level is sufficient to complete their coursework and produce coherent compositions. It is only after the initial class meeting and composition assessment that the instructor is able to view the bigger problem of reading illiteracy in English 1010. How does the instructor address the literacy of each individual student without affecting the learning environment of the students who are able to read and write a coherent composition? The problem in regards to reading levels should be addressed before the student even arrives on campus. There can be many reasons for the cause of reading illiteracy: learning disability, poverty, and education of parents to name just a few. The school systems are placing the burden of reading comprehension in the home and not at the educational level when all parties should be a part of the issue. Growing up in working class family, my mom worked all the time for the living of a big family with five kids, and my dad was in re-education camp because of his association with U.S. government before 1975.
