Subtle and overt forms of resistance exist in every revolution, certain strategies will more effective than others. Resistance takes form in many different ways, whether that is through small rejections of life conditions, syncretism, or all out bloody rebellion. Resistances can be short lived events or a constant continuation of resistance (Wright, 1992). Subtle forms of resistance are often used as a way to resist without serious repercussions. When we think of resistance the first think that comes to mind is large scale rebellions, but resistance do not have to be a bloody war. Resistance can be done at a small scale where the only people who know of the resistance is the one taking part in the act. This type of resistance is known as subtle resistance. Subtle resistance often takes place to allow the resistor to resist against their oppressor without the probability of serious repercussions. Subtle resistance is often used as a strategy when the resistor has more to lose than just themselves such as a family that relies on their income or support. In this case the resistor will often use subtle resistance as a way to resist without hurting their family as a consequence. The effectiveness of subtle resistance is not as overtly visible as hostile resistance but is effective in the way as it allows …show more content…
Most subtle resistances will not create any large scale change but allow resistance to continue through everyday resistance. Syncretism is a form of subtle resistance that has proven to be very effective by allowing double victory. Overt resistances often develop after there has been a prophecy from God which instigates a revitalization movement. Overt resistances are necessary; without them change would not exist. For a successful resistance using both subtle and overt forms of resistances allows for the highest probability of
When thinking of the word resistance, one gets a picture of a small, weak group of people using guns to fight against a powerful evil. Although this is a correct interpretation of resistance, there are more forms, such as spiritual and cultural resistance, that can be equally devastating to the cause of the powerful evil. A major example of all of these forms of resistance is the Bielski Otraid, subject of the 2008 film Defiance, as they actively resisted the Germans in these ways, become the physical embodiment of Jewish resistance as they drew parallels with the resistance shown by the Jewish people. The Jewish people demonstrated all of the forms of resistance, from the physical resistance seen in the armed revolts seen in multiple ghettos and some death camps, and the spiritual resistance through the attempted continuation of normal life in the ghettos and the acceptance of faith while at the death camps.
...y shocks most of people who hear and see it, encouraging and moving others who also suffer. In instance, Elena screamed at Longoria to show she would not give them any information about resistances and Antonio when Longoria was about to killing her (Tobar 148). Elena sacrificed her life to protect Antonio and her friends who fought against the Guatemalan government without using any violence when she faced Longoria who tried to kill her. She showed it was important not to be daunted by fear and to keep fighting for justice. Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi advocated nonviolent resistance as a means of seeking peace and gaining independence for the Republic of India from Britain. Justice should be served by means in the name of justice. Nonviolent resistance is a powerful way to fight against the cycle of violence and work towards the realization of a peaceful world.
For instance, in “The Diary of Anne Frank” Anne uses her diary to increase her family’s moral and to oppose the Nazis. As she writes about her daily life and attitude towards the Nazis, we see how she resisted by carrying on the legacy of her family with her writing. The Nazis policy was not just to remove the people, but to remove the memory of those people, and the very memories those people might have within them. Her diary is brought the people faith and optimism. People in the concentration camps used their talents such as acting or playing the piano to make people forget the hunger and misery and long for another concert. Meanwhile for the artists this was a revolt against the regime. Passive resistance points towards a future: by bearing its meaning is like a sealed envelope into in another era and redirects the world away from violence. Some may argue that you are doing nothing for the better of the Jewish people by hiding and are not helping the ultimate cause or end goal, but the people are making more of a difference preserving their culture by teaching and practicing it than killing five out of ten thousand people and then dying from being shot. The active resistors are not making that much of a difference in their army by killing a couple. By teaching, people are renewing their faith they
The debate between silently obeying the law and loudly resisting in the face of injustice is one that has existed since the birth of this country. Those who resist see the obedient citizens as ignorant of what goes on around them. On the other hand, those that are obedient see resistors as radicals. I believe that resistance, whether it be peaceful or violent, is justified. In this paper, I will refer to works by Frederick Douglass, Stephanie Camp, and Deborah Gray White to show that resistance is important to challenge injustices, whether it be slavery in the 1800s or inaction against racism at colleges in 2015.
Historical abolitionist Frederick Douglas famously once said “The thing worse than rebellion is the thing that causes rebellion.” Rebellion only happens because a group of individuals is dissatisfied with authority. Without this conflict between society and authority, humanity will not advance. Many conflicts occur frequently, but what is the frequency of individuals rebelling against authority? Some may choose to believe that this conflict is a rare occurrence, while many authors throughout history may believe that rebellion occurs more often than one might think. Rebellions against society can all be refined down to a rebellious action, a reason for rebellion, and a response from authority.
A great revolutionary once said, “The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall.” The revolutionary in this quote, Che Guevara, epitomizes the notion that revolutions are not a random occurrence but rather a continuous push for a fundamental change. In the framework of revolutions that have occurred in the world, most notably those that have occurred in Britain, America, France, and Haiti; one realizes that the elements of competition and mass mobilization are intrinsic to understanding the successes of each revolutionary movement. Yet, the catalysts and societal implications for each of these revolutions provides different venues of implementation that separates it from others.
Most generally, spiritual resistance may refer to the refusal to have one's spirit broken in
Resistance is defined as “the act or power of resisting, opposing, or withstanding”. Therefore, the Jews of Europe resisted the Third Reich every single day; withstanding the constant fear, the desolate aura, and the habitual cruelty. Existing became a heroic act of defiance as Hitler’s wrath swept through
There are three ways that oppressed people deal with their oppression. First is acquiescence. Second way is that oppressed people resort physical violence and corroding hatred. However, the third way is the way that Martin Luther suggests us to follow the most. It is nonviolent resistance. It is the way that opens to oppressed people in their quest for freedom. Nonviolence resistance is the practice of achieving goal by protesting with nonviolent. Nonviolence resistance can happen in many situations especially the unpleasant ones and it always lead us to the better.
Resistance to change is generally defined as ‘any conduct that serves to maintain the status quo in the face of pressure to alter the status quo’ (Zaltman and Duncan, 1977: 63). Folger and Skarlicki (1999: 36) conceptualized resistance as a ‘resentment based’ construct, defined as ‘reactions by disgruntled employees regarding the perceived unfairness of a change’. In the categorizing resistance to change that results from individuals and organizational factors.
“Revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall.” It is believed that any individual who advocates or takes part in a revolution dreams to change not only the world but the ‘man’ itself. These revolutionists dream not only of transforming social structures, institutions, and the system of government but also produce a profound, radical and independent ‘man’.2 With the development of these ideologies, certain methods are partaken in achieving their desired goal. Some will seek the path of pacifism while others proponent a violent revolution when achieving these ideology. Growing up we have been taught that violence cannot solve any problems it only makes it worse. But can one claim that these violent desired to bring revolution to be unethical? If so, imagine how Cuba would be like if it wasn’t for the 26th of July Movement; how colored people would be treated without Malcolm X’s attitude toward racism.
Resistance can be defined by, “refusal to accept something new or different; an effort made to stop or to fight against someone or something” according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Using that definition, resistance can basically be anything that isn’t conforming, but many people still think that resistance can only mean physical combat. Despite all of the possible definitions, resistance can only truly be defined by the person performing the resistance. If that person thinks that what they are doing is going against something that is being forced upon them, no one can contradict that. In the case of Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust, most people believe that the Jews were being passive, or did not resist at all until the armed resistance
Throughout history, countless uprisings have occurred. Historians classify any forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system as a revolution. The success or failure of a revolution is directly related to the revolution’s causes and consequences. The French Revolution was more successful than the Nicaraguan Revolution, because the Nicaraguan Revolution left the country in social and financial ruin, foreign powers had much greater interference, and it precipitated a period of political unrest with multiple leadership changes. One cause of both revolutions was that people from all social classes were discontented.

Suppression is said to happen, when one voluntary and consciously withholds a response. Unconscious repression in contrast may function as an automatic guardian against anxiety, a safety mechanism that prevents threatening material from entering consciousness.
