The Tough Life of Lily Owens People may think they have a tough life to go through, but few can compete with Lily Owens’. At just fourteen years-old, Lily must live with her abusive father and day after day will relive the moment she killed her mother. In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd she must find her true self in her journey through the book. Lily has no friends in her small town, since her father has poor fashion choices of “cotton print shirtwaists with crooked zippers and skirts” below her knees (8), and her knotted hair that does not get brushed often because she has no mother figure to look after her. August, the oldest sister, offered a job to both Lily and Rosaleen. Lily learns she needs a lot of strength and endurance in the task she accepts to become an assistant beekeeper. Unfortunately, “you can’t be a true beekeeper without getting stung”, so Lily has to be able to handle the sting of many bees (167). Her physical strength helps her endure future emotional pain. When she learns the truth about her mother, the pain does not paralyze her but it still hurt. In time she faced the problem and was able to go on. There is a pair of cotton gloves and a picture of her mother. However, the most important thing, a wooden figure with a picture of black Mary that has the words “Tiburon S.C.” engraved on the back. This led Lily and Rosaleen to the the Boatwrights house. August Boatwright helps Lily understand that the black Mary is not just a “statue in the parlor” but she is really something inside herself (288). The black Mary is a mother to everyone that is in need of one. Knowing about the black Mary helps Lily know she has always had a mother figure inside herself through the tough times of her life.
