Lil Pump is a new teen rapper from Miami, who is changing the game in hip hop. Pump’s a lo-fi rapper that makes music with his best friend, Lil Purpp (Smokepurpp). Pump is living the dream life of every seventeen year old boy: buying as many cars as you want, getting all the girls, having money to spend at all times, and doing something you love every day. But life wasn’t always like that for Lil Pump. Less than a year ago, Lil Pump was a bored sixteen-year old whose name was Gazzy and he was just trying to make money. It was Purpp who changed his life for the better.

Purpp convinced Pump to freestyle on a beat he made for his SoundCloud. Pump was a little nervous at first; this was going on a Purpp’s SoundCloud for all of his thousands of followers to hear. on an iPhone earbud speaker, and from there his career took off. Lil Pump has Gazzy Garcia was born on August 17, 2000, in Miami, Florida. Gazzy attended Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Gazzy had been kicked out of the ninth grade for fighting. After Gazzy got kicked out of high school, he met a kid who was a couple of years older than him named Omar Pinero.
Omar was a rapper, and produced a couple of friend’s SoundCloud tracks. Omar had a SoundCloud account that had a good amount of followers and a good fan base. Lil water, Lil Purpp, and Smokepurpp are the SoundCloud names Omar went by. Omar knew that Gazzy was a good rapper, so he convinced him to get on his track. Torrence Hatch (Lil Boosie) was born November 14, 1982 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and was born and raised in W. Garfield St, on the south side of Baton Rouge, a neighborhood well known for drugs and violence. Boosie faced many troubles inside and outside for school as he was growing up. When Boosie was 14, he moved in with his grandmother after his father was murdered in a drug-related activity. He then started to get very serious about basketball, he played in order to stay off of the streets, he was expected to go to college level, but then got expelled for possession of illegal drugs. Boosie had been rapping since he was 14 or 15, but never let anyone know because he didn’t think he was good enough, but after he was expelled, he began to get very serious about his music career. Lil Hardin Armstrong was born on February 3, 1898 in Memphis, Tennessee. Her parents were Dempsey Martin Hardin and Taylor Martin. Her father left her mother shortly after she was born, so her mother and grandmother raised her. The Hardin family was well-off financially, which allowed them to pay for Lil to receive formal piano lessons. She was taught with classical and spiritual music, and frequently played in her church. Lil yearned to delve into the southern jazz music that was big at the time, but her family was strictly against it.

The owners that train the dogs are usually the ones that make the dog turn out to be vicious and dangerous. “Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized, approximately 40% of whom are Pit Bulls”(Moore). Pit Bulls don’t know better to understand which is right from wrong since they’re being raised up to fight and protect. The Crips, as we learned in module 3 are one of the most notorious black or predominately African American gang founded in Southern Los Angeles, California in 1969. This gang was co-found by 16-year-old Raymond Washington and Stanley Tookie Williams III. Even before the Crips however, there was a gang known as the Hoover Groovers. The Hoover Groovers would later form an alliance with the Crips and change their name to Hoover Crips.
He may just seem like another rapper to you but if you actually listen to his lyrics you can see he’s not like any rapper out there. His name is Kanye West and he was born in Chicago Illinois. He grew up in the “ghetto” and learned to appreciate life. He didn’t learn to really, truly appreciate life until October of 2002. Driving back to his hotel late one night after a recording session, the new-coming rap/hip-hop artist was involved in a devastating, near fatal car accident. The crash left him with a broken jaw in three places and an appreciation for life. Just weeks after being released from the hospital he recorded his first major hit, “Through the Wire,” with his mouth still wired shut. He records every song like its going to be his last song and that makes every song better than the last. He’s not only a rap artist but also a producer. He has been responsible for being behind songs like Jay-Z’s Izzo, Girls, Girls, Girls, The Takeover, and 03 Bonnie and Clyde.

Kanye West has been an icon in American hip-hop culture for over a decade. His music, fashion line, producing skills, and flamboyant personality has influenced many people for generations to come. Coming out of Chicago, many people in the music industry didn't even think Kanye had a chance to become a figure in hip-hop, but his hard work and persistence paid off. Kanye started off his music career as a producer. He produced music for the likes of major artists such as Common and Jay-Z. His first major breakthrough came from producing Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint”— which is certified 2x platinum. Kanye believed he could be a successful rapper as well, but music executives didn't believe he had it in him. That all changed when Roc-A-Fella records signed Kanye to their label, and gave him a chance to shine as a rapper. Kanye’s background, critical analysis, and importance all shows that he has become one of the most important characters in American hip-hop culture to this day.
While Eminem portrays himself as being from Detroit, he is actually from Missouri. He moved back and forth between Detroit, Michigan and Kansas City, Missouri for most of his childhood. At the age of seventeen, Eminem started getting serious about wanting to be a rapper, giving himself the nickname M&M (meaning Marshal Mathers) and later decided to change the spelling to Eminem with the second E backwards as part of his trademark. He failed 9th grade 3 times, then dropped out, “School wasn’t for me” (Eminem). An education was the last thing on his mind. After throwing himself into the rap world on many levels, usually being shut down, he kept trying.
Kanye Omari West, an icon of hip-hop, pop culture, fashion and music in general. Kanye Omari West, a person belittled against and a person subjected to a life of racism and hate. Born on June 8th, 1977, Donda West, West’s mother, always knew he was destined for greatness, but did she know her son would turn out to be the Kanye West, a man lacking the respect he deserves for transforming a big part of the music we listen to on this very day? West came onto the scene in the late nineties but didn’t release The College Dropout until 2004, an album that took everybody by surprise. Kanye West changed the gangster filled rap genre by releasing his positive, soulful debut album, changing the way rappers dress, and paving the way for a whole new style of introspective lyrics and soul-inspired rap production in the mainstream.
Hip hop culture has been around since the 1970s. Multiple sources all come down to the South Bronx in New York City, as the origin of hip hop culture. The culture began to take its shape within the African American, Afro-Caribbean, and Latino communities. The father of the start of this culture was a Jamaican-born DJ named Clive Campbell but also known as DJ Kool Herc. He brought forth a new sound system and the Jamaican style of “toasting.” Toasting was when Jamaicans would talk or rap over the music they played. This whole new style soon brought what is now known as DJs, B-Boys, MC’s, and graffiti artists (Kaminski).
Biggie Smalls was the son of Jamaican parents, Violetta Wallace and George Latore. His father left the family when Biggie was just one years old. In Biggie’s early life, he was surrounded by drug dealing and other negative pursuits. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 21, 1972 and grew up on 226 St. James Place in a ghetto area. Biggie dropped out of high school at the age of seventeen. He often told his mother that he saw education as useless and a waste of time. At this point in his life, Biggie turned to drugs and became a crack dealer which became his only source of income. During this same year, he was caught doing a routine drug exchange in North Carolina in 1990 and was sent behind bars for nine months. Hip-Hop/Rap is one of the biggest growing genres of today. From its early stages in the 1970’s to today’s pop culture, it has grown quite a lot. Unfortunately, it has developed a terrible reputation of drugs, violence, abuse, and gangs. When people associate Hip-Hop with things it is usually a negative image that comes to the person’s mind. Which is sad, Hip-Hop/Rap has a great artistic quality to them that gets so easily overlooked. There is true poetry and emotion behind these lyrics and beats, but not everyone is willing to sit down and listen to it. They quickly judge this music genre and the immediately dislike it without giving it a second thought. Rappers pour their emotions and their souls into their songs and it really speaks to people who would stop and listen to them. Hip-Hop/Rap has evolved over time. From the early stages of Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and others to today’s rap stars like Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. Each decades style is different but each style is still good. What really made Rap huge was the Sugarhill Gang’s own song called “Rapper’s Delight” the entire song is around 15 minutes long with just three emcee’s rapping, Wonder Mike, Big Bank Hank, and Master G. An emcee is another word for a rapper. Most emcees are the head of whatever event is being taken place, kind of like people that do skits in a talent show to introduce the next act. Hip-Hop/Rap today is filled with emcees and rappers. Today we find a more complex and more diverse style than what we would find back in the 70’s. There are different styles to different rappers.
