Tupac was one of the most notorious and influential celebrities of the 90s and today still. He sold over 75 million albums worldwide, reaching Spain, Brazil, South Africa, and all corners of America. His career was filled with controversy and luxury just the same. As a rapper, a poet, an activist, and an actor, Tupac gained many fans, and also enemies. Tupac’s down-to-earth personality, talent and relatable music allowed him to become one of the top icons of the rap industry. Tupac, born Lesane Parish Crooks, was also known as 2pac, Pac and Makaveli. He was born in East Harlem Manhattan in New York on June 6th, 1961 to Afeni Shakur, and Billy Garland, both active members of the Blank Panther Party. Tupac was raised by a number of militant, commanding members of the Black Panther Party, including his godfather Elmer Pratt, his stepfather, Mutulu, and his step-aunt, Assata Shakur, a well-known political activist and Black Panther leader. When Tupac was 12, he and his family moved to Baltimore Maryland. In his junior year of high school, Tupac went to Baltimore School for the Arts where he studied jazz, acting, poetry and ballet. Tupac won many friends with his gift for rapping, his humor and his ability to mix in with all kinds of people. He and Jada Pinkett, soon to be famous actress, developed a lasting relationship that sadly ended when he died. In June 1988, Tupac and his family moved to Marin, California. There, in 1989, he began taking the poetry classes of Leila Steinberg. Leila put together a concert with Tupac’s group “Strictly Dope”, which led him to sign a recording contract with Atron Gregory. After the fight, Shakur and his entourage, including Suge Knight, were on their way to Club 662 when the drivers of a white Cadillac shot Tupac in his chest, pelvis and lung. He was admitted to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, but later died of claimed respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. After his death, Tupac had 6 posthumously released albums including The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory and Greatest Hits. His murder was a shock to his fans and all who loved him. He has not been forgotten. His song “Dear Mama” has been added to the Library of Congress (Wikipedia). He also was named one of the “100 Immortal Artists of All Time” by Rolling Stone. Tupac had a lasting impression on the world and changed the rap industry forever. He was a gifted artist that touched people around the world. He left a legacy that will live on for generations.
