In Life of Pi, Martel Yann blends fact and fiction with charm. Pi's unbelievable experience is revealed in a form of the author's notes. It makes the main character seem the author himself. Pi lives with the tiger Richard Parker on a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for 227 days. In Life of Pi, Yann Martel depicts a miraculous adventure of a 17-year-old boy and a Royal Bengal tiger and reveals a profound theme about survival and faith in order to appeal teenagers.
Martel creates a magical fable to make the audience believe the presence of God. Pi lives with Richard Parker alone in the terrible Pacific Ocean. It seems impossible to survive. However, Pi’s strong faith gives him hope and energy. "I will turn miracle into routine. The amazing will be seen every day" (LIFE of PI 233). Pi believes that God is with him. In Pi's childhood, Pi learned much about animal behavior. His father taught him that he should maintain a distance away from a wild animal. “I’m going to show you how dangerous tigers are, I want you to remember this lesson for the rest of your lives” (43). The words of his father, Santosh Patal are a foreshadowing. His knowledge about animal behaviors helps him to live with the tiger and suggests his survival tactics on the lifeboat. Pi uses his whistle to tame in order to show his dominance. The author describes a bloody killing to reveal the story's theme about struggle to survival. "She thumped the beast on the head.
