It includes characters that inspire readers, a message to the readers, and a twist to the story. One rule to writing a good book is to have a character that will inspire the readers. A character that will show the right from wrong, and bravery and strength in a tough situation. Life of Pi displays that through a character named Pi Patel. He was at sea with his family who planned on setting sail from India to Canada was for political freedom. However on this journey the ship suffered a storm and many were killed, including Pi’s family. He survived the accident. All Pi had was some water, food, small boat, and a tiger. At first Pi tried to get rid of the tiger and kill the tiger, but they got to know each other and trust each other and became all each other had. Life of Pi does have many twists but one that i liked the best was when he got stuck on the floating island of carnivorous creatures. When Pi found the island he was so happy to find the food and fresh water and it was like nothing he had ever seen before. After spending a little while on the island he started to notice strange things. All the animals would flee at the same time of day like something was coming for them. And when he looked inside a flower in the tree he saw the teeth of a human. This twist in the story led readers to wonder what the island was, if he was going to survive and why he came across the island. The Japanese reporters didn't believe Pi when he told them of the island, I think the island represented Pi losing his faith for a little from losing his family, and everything else but of course he got through
The demand to survive in an extreme environment encourages certain individuals to proceed to live their life despite the hardships they may face. In the novels, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, and Life of Pi by Yann Martel, the individuals must discover what it takes to obtain the will to survive in these extreme environments they are presented with. Thus, resulting in comparisons between their mental states (internal challenges), and contrasts between their physical states (external challenges) by Louie Zamperini and Piscine Molitor Patel (Pi).

He spent his childhood in several different countries, including France, Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. As an adult, he lived in many other places but one of them was India, which may be where he got inspiration for writing “Life of Pi”. Yann Martel uses the literary elements similes and foreshadowing, to express the theme that believing in religion can give you the faith to want to survive.
In Life of Pi, storytelling is told through the eyes of Pi Patel, who’s the main character. He gives such a bewildering story with many descriptive details that it’s hard to believe. He starts his story off by him surviving the shipwreck, jumping into a life boat with a zebra, hyena, tiger, and an orangutan. One important factor to consider is how he documents his journeys in a journal which he finds in the survival kit on the lifeboat. In conclusion, this is why I believe the book “Life of PI” is a story about a hero’s journey in the book. Pi is thrown into the situation without doing anything wrong. Pi doesn’t deserve this, infact he is a bright and smart kid as mentioned in earlier pages from the book. You want Pi to live, mainly because Pi doesn’t deserve to die. This story follows the life of the protagonist, Piscine Molitor “Pi” Patel, as he embarks on his journey as a castaway. After boarding the Tsimtsum which carries Pi and his family along with a menagerie of animals, an abysmal storm capsizes the ship leaving Pi as the only survivor, though he is not alone. The great Bengal tiger, Richard Parker, also survives the shipwreck and during the 227 days that Pi and Richard Parker are stranded at sea together, the two must learn to coexist and trust one another for survival. The main character in this book is Piscine Singh, otherwise known as Pi. An important trait Pi has is that he never gives up. Aside from that, he never believes that they will die and he never gives up. Even though he is stranded in the middle of the ocean he does not accept his almost certain death. Part of the reason Pi acts this way is because of his strong connection with religion. He studied Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam all at the same time because he did not believe there should just be one religion, and instead just wanted to learn to love God. Since he had such a strong connection with faith he was able to calm himself and focus on survival.

This requirement of proof for belief is typical of the agnostic, whose sole belief is that he or she cannot believe either way because there is no proof either way. However, life is a story, and in real life, there must be a story to tell. When it comes to Life of Pi, there is hardly any difference between life and story, so how could the novel not mimic life, being the story of a life itself? A life perhaps embellished to become better, just as readers must embellish their own lives in favor of the better story.

Duality reoccurs over the course of the novel through every aspect of Pi’s world view and is particularly seen in the two contradictory stories, which displays the brutal nature of the world. After his ordeal on the lifeboat, Pi becomes rational and humane; however his experiences has scarred him, and will forever remain with him. Readers can definitely learn from Pi’s experience with his shadow self. The more we refute our shadow, the more it weighs us down. However, if we are willing to come to terms with the reality of our shadow, learn how it works, “tame” it so that it does not control us, we would be more literate and enlightened.

Inside every human being, there is an extremely primal and animalistic trait that can surface when the will to survive becomes greater than the morals of the person. This trait allows humans to overcome their fear to do things which they wouldn’t normally be able to do in order to survive when they’re in extreme peril and in a do or die situation. Throughout the book, Life of Pi, survival is a dominant and central theme. The will to survive changes people and this includes the main character of the story, Piscine Molitor Patel. Survival will even change the most timid, religious, and law-abiding people. Yann Martel, using Pi as an example, tries to explain that all humans must do three things in order to survive a life threatening event: one must give up their morals, one must find a way to keep sane, and one must be ready to compromise and sacrifice.
In Yann Martel’s novel Life of Pi, the narrator and protagonist Pi is placed in a life or death situation which tests his beliefs and morality. The Life of Pi by Yann Martel was a fascinating and exciting narrative that described the journey of a young boys life starting with the formation of his beliefs moving all the way through an adventure that changed his life forever. I found it extremely engaging on both a philosophical level and a psychological level as I saw Pi, a young boy, curious about life, discover both religion and go through an extremely traumatic experience. I found Pi's devotion to God to be an uplifting example that many people throughout the world should see. Although I do believe that Pi was confused about how to best love God, I admire his efforts and believe that his dedication is sincere. I also found the psychological aspect of Pi to be almost as fascinating as religion. I could see from the beginning that Pi was quite thoughtful and always tried to think before he acted. However, what I found even more fascinating than his pre-planning cognitive abilities was how he thought when he was under great stress. Perhaps the best example of how he coped with stress was towards the end of the book when he tells what may be the true story, and we can see that he may have represented everyone as an animal in order to deal with the situation. This provides valuable insight into Pi's mind and opens a whole new area of possibilities when considering how Pi thinks. This ending leaves how Pi thinks open to interpreting which adds a intriguing aspect to the book. Beyond the religious and theoretical aspects of the book, the adventure seen kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.
