Reflecting back throughout my life, I realized I acquired the pertinent lessons in life from some extremely, unlikely sources, although I would not realize the importance of the lessons for several years. This is a lesson that I value and continue still today. Unsure whether to call it observation or understanding or perhaps even humbleness. The name of this lesson is far less important than daily practicing of this behavior. Realizing that all people, regardless of their age, race, or gender, have something to teach as long as my mind is open to receiving is the greatest tidbit of knowledge I have. Kate had a horrible speech impediment as a child and often receiving teasing by other children. Instead of accepting her fate, as the baby she pushed and fought against it. By practicing her speech continuously and pushing herself continuously to learn more than her older siblings and friends, she not only gained their confidence but her own as well. Watching her, I realized that this young child was teaching more than I was. Having given up, she quit trying to learn, quit living and was merely existing. As I sat back and observed this woman's life, I wondered what could restore active participation in life again. Knowing horrendous events in this woman's life had brought her to this point, however, the time to restore some life into her existence had arrived. So, what if she failed or people no longer accepted her or if she no longer accepted them, the important factor was that she tries, that she doesn't accept defeat, and that she hopefully returns some of the important lessons to others who may be observing her.
