It's been a couple of weeks since I last wrote to you and, I am now writing you this letter to tell you that our air force took down the Red Baron, I mean it took a lot of work but, we eventually accomplished our main goal. In fact, it was all Roy who achieved it and brought Manfred and his plane crashing down to the ground. I mean we were watching all of this happen from the air base, it was all action- packed but, scary as Roy went at them after our other friends plane was having some technical difficulties. He managed to take both the enemy planes down and he safely took his and our friends plane down back to the air base. It was just so outrageous but, serious at the same time, I mean Roy trusted his guts and when he saw danger he went and made sure that it didn't cause any harm to …show more content…
After his work in the air that day, he was extremely exhausted. Sadly, after nine days, in which he got the plane down, he was admitted to the hospital with influenza and nervous exhaustion, I mean I would be too if I went all through that knowing that your life could be at risk or even taken at any second while you are in the air. Anyways, I just wanted to write this letter to you to tell you that I am fine and that we have brought down the Red Baron so, their is not that much of a risk now to our fellow Canadian soldiers. Well, as you can tell you're coming close to finishing reading letter, as you know, I probably have to go now as duty never rests. I love you with all my heart and please give kisses and hugs to our kids. I love you my dear wife and I don't want you to worry about me, I will be fine. I will return home to you one day as soon as all of this bloodshed is done. I will also keep you posted on Roy and I are doing. Remember this isnt goodbye its just until next
In James Oakes, the Ruling Race, the author tackles many of the toughest questions that arose in southern history. In the Ruling Race, Oakes argues against Eugene Genovese ' American slavery 's ideology of paternalism. The author believes that paternalism died by the end of the colonial era and as a result, there came new slaveholders who were diverse, and influenced by the materialistic buildup in the South due to their search for economic opportunity. Oakes views most slave owners as greedy capitalists who embraced the marketplace. When Oakes says “the ideology and culture of slaveholding were not fully developed when Americans declared their independence from Great Britain” (p.34) we see that paternalism is viewed by Oakes as a superior force that was caused due to the American Revolution. The difference between the slaveholding population and the planters is attacked by the author towards Genovese and his ideas of paternalism and anti-capitalistic views. The author states that the desire to expand and prosper was a capitalistic view, which resulted ending the mythology of the paternalistic planter.

Basketball was created and has been played since December 1891 (Griffiths, 2010), it is a game of skill and talent that is enjoyed by fans all over the world. There are numerous leagues, but the two main leagues are the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). The NCAA is considered amateur where the players are not paid, and the NBA is considered professional where players make millions of dollars. In order for the NBA to get their players they draft from the NCAA, but the rules have changed several times over the years that have permitted players to enter the NBA. The current rule states that NBA players must be one year removed from high school or 19 years of age (Article X, 2008), this rule is considered by many needing the most change.
Detachment from reality is what the main characters in both Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried” and Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” express. “The Things They Carried” is the collection of interrelated short stories of Lieutenant Cross and his experiences throughout the Vietnam War. “The Masque of the Red Death” is the story of a prince who fears the “Red Death” who hides himself, along with some townspeople, to escape from the terrible disease. Each character, despite having two very different roles in their lives, have to face reality. In order to fully understand the relationship between these two works, each of these factors in turn.
In the Crucible, we are introduced to the main protagonist John Proctor; the way that Arthur Miller presents him by rebelling against the authority in Salem. Out of the entire town he is the only person that speaks out, realising that the authority is unfair and unjust; he is not like everyone else in the town who keeps quiet to themselves. There are many situations where we the readers can see very clear examples of him rebelling against the authority that controlled Salem. One example of Proctor rebelling against authority in Salem was when he did not go to church on a Sabbath day and instead decided to pray in his own home ‘Mr Proctor, your house is not a church; your theology must tell you that’. That is one clear example of him rebelling
Another reason was identity. Napoleon only represented Stalin, and that really brought out his characteristics. Since Napoleon was meant to represent Stalin, all of Stalin’s traits, most of his bad deeds, and events occurred in the book. For example, in Animal Farm, Orwell made Snowball seem smarter than Napoleon, but made Napoleon more powerful. This is true in real life because Lenin was a lot more educated than Stalin, but Stalin ended up with the power (Radinsky 97)
Letters on England is a small collection of letters written by Voltaire (born François-Marie Arouet) in 1733 which offers a survey of societal England from the view of a Frenchmen. The original Letters on England, titled Lettres philosophiques, was written in English by Voltaire. This first edition was quite a cumbersome read and so in 1980 Leonard Tancock retranslated the book to English from a previous French edition. Just a few years prior to the release of Letters on England, Voltaire had been imprisoned by France and then exiled to England. This incarceration and banishment was in response to satirical compositions written by Voltaire that the French political powers felt undermined their rule. Despite harsh censorship laws, Voltaire still wrote many works over his lifetime which critically questioned European traditions; often times manifesting quite a satirical touch to the piece. He was often critical of established religion and absolute monarchy, including the tight church-state relationship, expressing his distaste for their hypocritical behaviors and corruptness. Voltaire’s works occasionally commented on the importance of empiricism and experiential philosophy, ideas which had just begun to gain traction over the previous few decades. Letters on England was Voltaire’s response to what he observed during his time in England: a society with religious tolerance, a moderate political power, and an emphasis on science and the arts. He saw the French government and its equally authoritative church as a persecutory tyranny, stifling the thoughts and rights of its citizens. John Beckett mentions that the Glorious Revolution has been considered a historical event related to the political issues. The main target of this historical event was to create a commercial freedom in Europe. After this revolution was done, trade relations in Europe went up, and the Bill of Rights was also created in 1689. Today, the Bill of Rights is shown and known that it was the first building stone for the British constitution because it limited the monarchic power. During the eighteenth century, the period of the Age of Enlightenment is considered between 1713 and 1789 because Anthony Pagden states that Europe was like a republic of states, and it was like a union acting together and talking with one voice. One of the main themes in The Crucible is reputation. With so many of the townspeople yelling accusations of witchcraft and pointing fingers, a person's reputation became a thing of utmost importance because it was who you were and how you were viewed. However, as the trials went on, reputation no longer mattered to the courts as even the ‘best’ and most upright citizens were brought in on accusations and then later tried, and hanged. One such example is Rebecca Nurse. In the end John Proctor recognizes that reputation is still a representation of who you are. Personal integrity is the only thing that can stand against mass corruption, as illustrated by John Proctor, who had decided to hang rather than confess to crimes he did not commit.
Our reputations are beliefs and opinions that are held by our friends, family and even complete strangers about bout us. Someone’s reputation determines how they will be seen before even meeting them, almost like a first impression. Which is why your reputation is something you need to handle with care and protect, however some will go to extremes in doing this for instance the play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller. It is a look into what it was like back in the 1800’s during the Salem witch trails. During this play Miller makes the strong argument of the importance of reputation and the countless ways people will protect it. In the play this occurs with many of the characters some more than others yet it’s of importance to everyone in some way or another. The protection of one’s reputation also occurs outside of the play, an example of this would be in politics and sports. In the play The Crucible, Author Miller makes the argument that reputation is incredibly important and people will go to great lengths such as betrayal and lying to protect it, quite often ones morality will become altered when protecting their reputation.

Joseph Stalin had a major impact on the Soviet Union and the rest of the world. He changed the world by making the Soviet Union a powerful, modern nation, and also the largest state on Earth through his policies and ideas. He also led the killing of millions of people including commoners who spoke out against him (McKenna 94). He also had the Great Purge, which sent anyone who was not “loyal” to him to camps and executed them. In total he killed about seven times as many people as Hitler did which would probably be about twenty to sixty million people. Stalin also changed the world by helping to start the Cold War, and also some of the countries that aligned with the Soviets in the Cold War are still in poverty because their benefactor crumbled. Stalin was the face of the second world for a chunk of the twentieth century and the Cold war. Stalin also created the Five Year Plan, which was a series of nation-wide economic plans in the Soviet Union. The plans were developed by a state planning committee and were general guidelines of the communists used for economic development. During the Cold War Stalin challenged the Allies multiple times trying to win the war and created major damage to a lot of countries including Germany. Competition between the Soviet Union and the United States escalated during the Cold War to a point where nuclear war was not going to be a surprise. Joseph Stalin ended up losing the Cold War, but still created a lasting impression due to his theory of ruling by fear. The Russian Revolution of 1917 was a rebellion of the Russian people against the rule of the Russian Empire. Russia was a country full of many unsatisfied people; the nation experienced a series of changes in the late 19th and 20th century that would ultimately bring about revolution. The Russian people were starving, industrialization was emerging and the middle class was asking to be a part of the ruling of the country. As a result of the revolution, Russia saw its withdrawal from World War I, major industrial growth and ultimately the spread Communism throughout the world. The inevitable causes of the Russian Revolution were the weaknesses of the Russian Empire, World War I and the collapse of the Tsar’s regime. The nation now began its path towards emerging as a world power following the revolution.
