When it comes to the topic of legalizing prostitution, most of us readily agree this is a highly debatable, and emotional topic, and at the core, “both men and women have the right to freedom of choice over their sexuality”. But when engaging in this topic, one cannot ignore the positive and negative effects on a nation that legalizes prostitution. In my own opinion, I disagree with the legalization of prostitution, human trafficking takes on major effects on the nation’s economic system.
By criminalizing prostitution the effect of human trafficking can increasingly go down. Counties with legalized prostitution have a higher human trafficking import than those counties where prostitution is illegal. If prostitution were to become legalized it would only call for more prostitution than banning it. In the article, “Prostitution and Human Trafficking: The Middle Road of Regulation” Researcher Alexandra Rudolph explains the effect of human trafficking imports in various countries. Alexandra states, “Human trafficking inflows is stronger on high-income countries than middle-income countries. Because trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation requires that clients in a potential destination country have sufficient purchasing power, domestic supply acts as a constant” (Rudolph). Basically, Rudolph states that countries who are wealthy are more likely to have a high human trafficking rate. Although those who run the prostitution business have that in their advantage.
