1. How would you describe Jack Hartnett’s leadership style?
Jack Hartnett’s leadership style as it is described in the text is anachronism. He runs his business in his own way. The styles that he has chosen to run his business describe him as also a good leader and a “difficult to cope with” leader.
The things that made him a “difficult to cope with” leader is that he enforce his employees with his own Eight Commandments, that his employees have to follow. If they don’t follow these commandments he will fire them. An example of his Commandments is “I will tell you only one time”. It’s a very strict commandment and you can expect many employees to follow some unreasonable statements.
Another example of his bad leadership style is that his employees can’t obey him and the sure thing they can’t disagree with him. These two examples made him a leader that his employees will have difficulties to cope with him. Is difficult to work under such conditions. Some people can not be effective if they have to follow such rules in a company.
On the other hand in the text it describes the other side of his leadership style.
As it is written in the text he is also a good leader and he knows what he wants for his business, how to keep his employees and how to run his business for high profit.
He is doing top-lever hiring by himself and he spends a lot of time with them and their spouses so he can find all information about them. He wants to find all info about them because one of his goals is to have employees that are willing to work with him for a long time. He likes to have employees that are loyal and are willing to work hard for him.
Working with Jack Hartnett, will ensure you a home, family, community and a place to grow.
He will be there for you when you have problems with your family and spouse, because he wants employees to be focused when they are working and not thinking about family problems.
Jack Hartnett is a good leader because he spends a lot of time with his employees playing golf and also wants to create bonds that last with his employees, also working with Jack Hartnett means that you will get paid above national averages.
He had a mixture of autocratic and democratic leadership. He was sole decision maker for the longest time, only figuring out how to make profits happen. His leadership was learned from a young age that I have talked about all throughout this paper. His upbringing in religion had a large impact on his life. The quote of he tended his faith as well as his business, made a lot of sense. He took all his business lessons from his father, life and faith lessons from his mother, and applied them to make his business flourish. My feelings about this leader have not changed by doing more research, as he is someone I have followed for quite some time. All it has done has possibly confuse me more. A philanthropist who does so much good, while being an accessory to all the bad being done to force these companies to sell theirs to Standard Oil. The biggest conspiracy ever.

One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
He was very persuasive too when he convinced his crew to carry on working. These are all characteristics of what I would say makes a perfect leader.
Originally presented in the 1964 article “A contingency model of leadership effectiveness”, Fred Fiedler’s Contingency Theory states that there is no one best managerial style effective for all situations. In the movie we appreciated that he developed his leadership throughout the years. At the beginning he was not such a good leader, he was very intelligent but he did not possessed clear leadership attributes. He was able to mobilize people through charisma and his leadership developed and changed with experience. He was not good at handling men. An example of this situation could be when he was in the train; he demonstrated that he was not yet prepared to deal with the injustices of people towards him, when they asked him to move to second class.
Leadership styles and practices, one of the most vital aspects determining productivity in organizations, is truly what sets the standard for every level of management within a company. If a proper leadership style is not chosen and followed to lead a team within an organization, there will be no one to follow and the team will certainly not be successful. The repercussions of poor leadership will certainly make a drastic difference in a company. This can include the needs of not only employees, but customers, shareholders, partnership companies and supplier needs to name a few. Not meeting these needs are certainly grounds for decreased profits overall in the long run.
However, Fielder's theory provides useful implications for understanding the complex leadership process. First, Fielder's theory demonstrates that it is unrealistic for an organization to require a leader to be effective in every situation. Fielder argues that leaders should be placed in situations which match their style in order to optimize success. He proposed that organizations “build an organizational environment in which the leader can perform well” (Koontz, 2009). Fielder stressed that placing leaders in “mismatched” situations places a tremendous amount of pressure on a leaders which ultimately results in decreased organizational performance (Northouse, 2013). Second, Fielder's theory provides useful information to organization to help them in determining which leaders are better suited for certain situations. One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the Admission Department at Texas Wesleyan University.
Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.

There are many examples of poor leadership behavior in today’s workplace. Inadequate leadership can be detrimental not only to a team within an organization, but also to the entire organization itself. I believe it is vital for upper management to ensure that their leaders are properly trained and aware of how to handle certain situations and employees. When a leader’s weaknesses are overlooked, large problems occur.
Leadership is essentially the ability to motivate. An effective leader can motivate others toward reaching a common goal. Leaders are different than managers in that leaders inspire others to do the work needed while managers generally tend to manage the tasks associated with completing the goal.
