In the book, Churches, Cultures and Leadership, the co-author Mark Lau Branson mentions a quote by the theologian Pat Keifert. The quote claims that we do not learn anything from “experience” but that “one learns only from experience one reflects upon and articulates.” He proposes five questions that are relative to the aforementioned claim and are categorized as practical theology. Michael Dash and Christine Chapman in the book The Shape of Zion, point out that the work of effective pastors is based on the challenge to “give the work of congregational development back to people without abandoning them.” The paper will focus on answering the claim by a German pastor and theologian named Dietrich Bonhoeffer “the group is the womb …show more content…

On a biological level, it tends to be the interior where the offspring takes shape and is nurtured by the food that it receives by its mother. Here, I am reminded of my experience of praxis in a congregational leadership, at my Field Site, the Evanston Vineyard Church. This year, on January 8th, 2015 the Evanston Field Site held a six hour meeting in which they discussed the whole year’s calendar and other plans. During the meeting the pastors discussed the pros and cons of letting the congregation shake hands while passing the “peace of Christ”. The meeting was supervised by the Senior Pastor and other pastors who are also part of the church council. The team of pastors that included myself, provided reasons for changing the extension of peace to allowing the congregation to stretch themselves or, take a break for few minutes while the sound system team set up the podium for the Teaching Pastor to deliver the sermon. During the meeting, the decision was mutually approved, providing the reasons of doing it. The decision was implemented for a few months until the congregation spoke against this and, expressed their disapproval to the Senior Pastor through emails and one-to-one interactions. Finally, the decision was changed and once again the congregation was officially invited to extend a handshake as extension of passing of the peace and, not spend be confused about spending their time stretching or thinking what the reason of not passing the peace
