Diego Velazquez's Las Meninas is one of the greatest pieces of art of all time. Many people today are still questioning what Velazquez meant with the painting. Many who are still eager to understand what Velazquez was meaning to say are puzzled by the self portrait he added to the artwork. Pablo Picasso was so intrigued by the piece that he decided to recreate it with a series of 58 different paintings. Although some of the painting’s features are similar some are very different.
One main difference between the paintings are the way they are portrayed. Diego Velazquez’s Las Meninas or Maids of Honor is thought by many to portray the relationship between reality, illusion, and art. It is also known as a virtue to art and artist. For instance, in Velazquez's painting he shows a realistic picture of the princess getting help from her helpers in great detail, while in Picasso's artwork is mostly made of of shapes and other strange styles of painting and artwork.
The third difference that people have noticed between the two artist’s work are what the paintings focused on. In Velazquez’s version he seems to focus on the maids that are helping the princess. He even called the painting Las Meninas which means lady in waiting or maids of honor. Which is clearly referring to the women who are helping the princess. However in Picasso's artwork he has the princess in the spotlight. In the painting you can see a maid but it is much smaller than the princess and there is only one.
Another key difference in the artworks are the amount of people and objects in the paintings. In Velasquez's version you can see a number of people including the maids, the princess, dwarves, and even himself. However in Picasso’s painting you can only see the maid and the
