Larissa Spencer is doing a half day internship at Pro Sports Therapy during the spring semester of her senior year. It is a physical therapy facility in Westford. I would like to enter the University of Charleston’s Athletic Training Program on the basis that I love being around sports and I enjoy working with and taking care of athletes. I first became interested in Athletic Training when I was given a tour of the UNC Athletic Training facility by Kevin Guskiewicz, who is the current dean of UNC College of Arts and Sciences. He was the previous head Athletic Trainer for UNC. After the experience, I quickly enrolled in Athletic Training classes in high school and began to learn the basics for becoming an Athletic Trainer. I loved learning about different injuries and how to treat them because as a student athlete I am very accident prone and figuring out what is wrong with my body is important for my collegiate athletic career. I have also had a dream of working with professional athletes. I have been involved with sports my whole life and have always considered these professional athletes as my role models. Beginning at the age of six, I have played some type of sport year round. I was always a bigger kid growing up, weight wise and height wise and unfortunately, I inherited bad knees. Combine this with the perils if sports plus some bad luck, the saying “the bigger they are the harder they fall” was a reality for me. When I fell, I fell hard. It took a lot of pain for me to want to go to the doctor’s office. I have spent a lot of time there. I’ve had many physical therapy sessions as well. I’ve also had numerous conversations with active athletic trainers and people that were athletic trainers in the past. They all said the same thing, “I love my job.” In the 8th grade one particular therapist sparked my interest in becoming a physical therapist.
My journey to pursue an education in physical therapy actually originates from my early childhood. I endured a very impoverished upbringing and my family’s socioeconomic status was below the poverty line. At a very young age, money became the central issue of my life. I found myself worrying about mortgages, health bills, and grocery money. As I grew older, I vowed to myself that I would not endure my family’s financial burdens into my adulthood. The internship that I acquired during the summer of 2010 at the Greenwood Sports and Industrial Rehabilitation Center (GSIRC), allowed me to gain an immeasurable amount of experience during my tenure at this facility. Within this period, the exposure to new concepts within the physical therapy industry allowed me to observe and work hands on with patients of all ages and disabilities that exposed me to various treatment plans and programs to restore client’s mobility. The essential Physical Education and Exercise Science (PEES) courses taken at Lander University were beneficial to my academic knowledgebase, which prepared me and developed me for the opportunity within the physical therapy discipline. Working as an intern taught me the responsibility of time management and working within a lean schedule that allow me to further develop my skill set.
