Reflection
An effective lesson always comes with a good planning before the lesson (Nesamalar, Saratha & Teh, 2005). A good Language Arts lesson plan takes into account the purpose of the literary text and teaching-learning activities that are chosen should engage the pupils in authentic and meaningful activities and parallel to the best pedagogical principles of teaching young learners (Monoranjan, Bharati & Jayasri, 2013). Therefore, this reflection is on the experience of developing a lesson plan about pedagogical principles in relation to using songs in the primary ESL classroom. This reflection will also discuss about the new found realisations or perspectives on planning and actual teaching.
According to (Graham, 1992), catering to the interest of the pupils is one of the important pedagogical principles when considering using songs in a classroom. Pupils of a primary school will prefer music as it is fun and capturing their interest (Kang & Crandall, 2014). In order to cater their interest in learning, we have adapted the poem of “A Shaggy Dog Story” by putting music to it. Besides, we also synchronise actions with the song. It is good if the teacher shows a picture of the shaggy dog to ease the pupils’ imagination of the shaggy dog which is the main character in the poem. It is also advisable to bring realia to the class such as postcards to be introduced to the pupils. Authentic materials help the pupils to discover new connections between curriculum topics, and discover the links between these topics and the outside world (Geyser, 2006).
