Communication and representation are very important parts of landscape architecture. Without communication to sell a design no project would ever be built. Communication is used to ensure a client that a design exceptional. Representation also plays a large role in public perception of design. The public audience can look at representation to understand a project more thoroughly. Through representation landscape architects have the power to educate the public on the benefits of green spaces and other landscape architecture projects. Current visual communication practices involve creating plans, sections, diagrams, and illustrative perspectives. These drawings show how exactly a space should look and conveys necessary information to the audience. This information usually only shows spatial information or functionality. There are several different phases in design and each phase has a specific set of drawings that communicate a project (Design Workshop 2016). The drawings that are created during each phase must be clear, understandable, and commutative (Ching, VI). Although all architectural drawings have the same objective they do however evolve over time (Cantrell and Michaels 2015). In the past, landscape architecture has undergone changes in representation and these changes will continue as the field of landscape architecture progresses (Amoroso 2012). The drawings produced today must be visually gripping as well as spatial and functionally informative (Amoroso 2015). As landscape architecture continues to change over time, landscape architects must find ways to visually captivate an audience to show the full depth of a project through visual communication. By combining plans, sections, diagrams, perspectives and other architectural drawing with artist renderings designers will be able to educate the public in a more meaningful way. By adding artistic visuals landscape architects will create a connection to the public thus communicating a design more effectively. Visual communication is very important to landscape architecture; it has more power than just a means to build a project. It not only can persuade clients, but also visual communication has the power to educate the public about landscape architecture. To do this representation must find a way to change a viewer’s perspective. Art is one way to get into the minds of the public. Through art and representation landscape architects can teach the public about outdoor spaces. Graphic visuals most both have an informational base as well as have experiential, emotional, and expressive content. With combination of these ideas through art a landscape architect has a greater power to reach and educate the public
