Canadian author Margaret Atwood once said “If I waited for perfection, I would never write a word.” This quote applies to people both real and fictional as much as it does to a piece of writing. Fictional characters in well written stories show a wide range of strengths and weaknesses. Throughout our unit on short stories, we saw many examples of strengths and weaknesses in the stories “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, and “Do You Speak English?” by Simon Collings. In the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl, there is a large variety of strengths and weaknesses displayed by Mary Maloney, the protagonist. It is shown that she is physically strong, very intelligent, and an excellent liar because of how she manages to get away with a murder and destroy the murder weapon. However, early on it is shown that she is unable to control her emotions; this is revealed when Mary kills her husband Patrick when he says he is leaving her. “A Lamb to the Slaughter” easily shows us how a main character can have both strengths and weaknesses. …show more content…

Mathilde Loisel, the protagonist, is shown to be very vain, arrogant, and stubborn. This is presented to the reader through her immature pouting when she is offered the invitation to the ball but does not own a fancy dress or expensive jewels. As the story progresses it is revealed that Mme Loisel is a hard worker and that she doesn’t give up; this is displayed through her hard work both to find another version of the necklace she lost and to pay off the necklace over ten years. “The Necklace” is an excellent example of a story where the main character has both strengths and
