Who is responsible for King Duncan’s death? Is it Lady Macbeth who pushed and talked down on Macbeth to do it or was it Macbeth who actually did the dirty deed? In my opinion, I personally think Lady Macbeth is responsible for Duncan’s death. Lady Macbeth countlessly talked down on Macbeth, calling him a coward and not a man. Throughout my paper, I will provide textual evidence on how Lady Macbeth is responsible for the death of King Duncan.
Lady Macbeth is responsible for the death of King Duncan. In the play “The Tragedy of Macbeth” the main character Macbeth and Lady Macbeth make a plan to kill King Duncan so Macbeth can become King. Who is really responsible for King Duncan’s death. I think Lady Macbeth is responsible for his death. My first point is that Lady Macbeth is not affected by the murder as she says in the book “these deeds must not be thought of these ways so, it will make us mad” (Line 32-33 pg. 330). Lady Macbeth wanted to act like nothing happened, she said washing the blood away makes it seem like it never happened.

Although Macbeth had changed his mind and basically refused to murder Duncan, Lady Macbeth was able to eventually convince him to carry through with the plan. Even though Macbeth was the one who executed the plan, Lady Macbeth was the mastermind behind the scheme. Her greed for power was the one major factor that possessed her to convince Macbeth of the plan and carry through with it. Macbeth murdered Duncan at Iverness, and became hysterical after doing so.

In all of Shakespeare's tragedies, a truly good character eventually experiences a horrific event. In Johnston’s lecture he says that Macbeth cannot be held accountable for the death of Duncan. The lecture says, “His (Macbeth) imagination has committed him to evil before his conscious mind realizes that the decision has been made.” The lecture further breaks down the state of Macbeth’s mind and exactly how Duncan’s death occurs. Johnson makes a good point on Macbeth’s mental behavior, but it should also be said that he agreed to kill Duncan before he even entered the room. In Act 2 scene 1 Macbeth says, “I go and it is done. The bell invites me/ Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell/ That summons thee to heaven or to hell.” He has come to consensus that he will kill Duncan and that his soul will face the entrance of heaven or hell. I am certain of Macbeth’s obvious consent to killing Duncan. Later in that act, after Duncan’s death, Macbeth goes to see his wife to tell her that Duncan is dead. They then begin to discuss the all the incidents that occurred after his death, like the owl hooting. After the death of King Duncan, Macbeth becomes the more controlling one, and Lady Macbeth’s guilt eventually becomes too much for her to handle which leads to her death. Lady Macbeth is in fact the one that performs the preparations for the murder of King Duncan, but still shows some signs of humanity by not committing the murder herself because he resembles "My father as he slept". After the murder has been committed, she also shows signs of being a strong person because she calms Macbeth down in order to keep him from going insane.

Other than that Lady Macbeth was the one to plan everything in the murder. Her plan started by getting the guards drunk, and then giving their daggers to Macbeth. After that Macbeth, will use the daggers that Lady Macbeth gave him and stab the unguarded Duncan, and blame it on the guards. After stabbing Duncan Macbeth will leave the daggers with the dead guards.

Macbeth is the one who to blame for killing Duncan. In the timeline of the play, men were known to be superior to women, especially to their wives. Duncan’s death will never happen if Macbeth just use his own morals,“‘I dare do all that may become a man/ Who dares do more is none,’” (I.vii.ll.51-52). In this quote he shows that he was trying to kill his desires of taking Duncan’s position.
Lady Macbeth convinced Macbeth to kill King Duncan, she did this because she wanted to assume the position of the throne. Lady Macbeth planned out the murder and who would be blamed for it, she just couldn’t execute the action herself, and that’s why she had Macbeth do it. If she never made Macbeth kill Duncan, then I don’t think all the other crimes that followed would’ve happened.
We certainly know that the direct responsible for Duncan’s death is Macbeth. However this does not necessarily mean he is to blame, for his violent death is obviously the consequence of certain influences that forced Macbeth to perform his fatal deed. Furthermore, to unearth the truth about who is really the guilty for Duncan’s murder we must explore the influences the different characters have on Macbeth’s impulses and the overall scenario of the slaying.
Many factors were involved in Macbeth's decision to kill King Duncan. He had pressure from his wife, he had an idea in his head, given to him by the three witches, and he was extremely ambitious. All of these factors contributed to his demise in the end and his decision to murder his king.
Lady Macbeth seems like the right person who the most at fault. It is true that Lady Macbeth is the one who tells Macbeth to murder Duncan, and with her words in her aside, “unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty,” (I.v. 391-392) along with many other horrible scenes Lady Macbeth gives. It gives the audience a purpose to accuse her for all the murders. Lady Macbeth is argued to be in control of Macbeth. John Turner, coauthor of two books on Shakespeare, says, “Until her sense of time dissolves and Macbeth seems crowed already,” (Johnson) which shows that the image of Macbeth being King and having power is driven by Lady Macbeth’s ambitiousness. This is not entirely true. Lady Macbeth does have an ambition for power but not to the extent to be killing everyone. She only wanted Duncan off the throne, she was not aware of the other men in authority, such as Macduff, suspecting her and her husband. She was not paranoid like Macbeth, which is why he killed so many people. It’s reasonable to argue that Lady Macbeth was the influence; therefore she is to be at most at fault. She also was not the one to kill Duncan and the other people, Macbeth did.
Duncan is the most unlikely character to be killed because of his personality, but his title as King of Scotland, causes for Macbeth to loathe Duncan. In the play there is very little interaction between Macbeth and Duncan, showing the little time in which Macbeth gets more power. Prior to the witches’ prophecies Macbeth is loyal to Duncan, and would never imagine killing him. After the one of the witches’ prophecies comes to be true, the thought of killing Duncan, Macbeth "yield[s] to that suggestion / whose horrid image doth unfix my hair / and make my seated heart knock at my ribs" (1.3.146-148). Partly because of Lady Macbeth’s suggestion his "vaulting ambition" is starting to take over, and he begins to take into consideration killing Duncan, to become king. Macbeth however, does not feel comfortable in killing Macbeth, giving himself reasons why not to kill Duncan: “First, as I am his kinsman and his subject, Strong both against the deed; then, as his host, Who should against his murderer shut the door, Not bear the knife myself,” (I, vii, 13-16) Lady Macbeth, convinces Macbeth, that killing Duncan is the right thing to do until right before he performs the murder. We learn from this murder that Macbeth truly had faith in the king and was very loyal, but knowing that one day he would become king, his ambition and the persuasion of Lady Macbeth, causes him to perform the act, that he will regret. This murder changes Macbeth as a person, however, and he soon feels little regret for killing King Duncan, but this act will soon aid in his downfall.
