Have a minute or two? Good, sit down and relax, because while reading this it may take a few minutes to change your opinion about competition. Competition could build character, but on the downside, it could leave someone with low self-esteem. This paper will discuss how competition is not always the best in certain situations. It will provide different types of examples and different types of scenarios where competition is harmful. Kohn mentioned in the article, Against competitiveness, “A more reasonable and humane perspective is always hard to come by when we’re told that we’re in a race” (2014). Altogether, competing can sidetrack people from what is essential to completing the business’s mission statement. People that were dedicated to working on a project may take time-consuming precautions while others are around. Kohn mentions in the article, No Contest, “Although our society often confuses them, victory and excellence are actually two very different ideas.” Victory, a defeat of an enemy or opponent. Excellence, the quality of being outstanding or extremely exceptional. The definition of the two words should not go hand in hand. We can be excellent without competition and without a victory. As soon as a competitor changes their plans or a new competition comes along customers may not want to change their mind about going to a different location (Belonwu). Having a “rivalry” may help concentrate on what needs to be improved in a business depending on what their weaknesses and strengths are. Having competition may be wonderful for the consumers because they have different choices to select what kind of brand of clothing, shoes, or a variety of tools, food and etc. Being able to choose a certain type of customer, may bring in a flow of customers that they’re are trying to reach out for; such as Walmart, they chose to sell products that are family oriented while having different areas in the store pertaining to men’s, women’s, and children’s necessities. If a customer is loyal and you all of a sudden are raising prices on items where they can get goods at a lower price elsewhere, that is causing a business to be disloyal due to competition.
All things considered, competition can be either benevolent or unacceptable. Being competitive in most activities or events is not always appropriate, and in some cases, competition could bring up negative feelings if not everybody was treated the same or
