The Knights of the Temple during the Crusades The Crusades were a set of “Holy” wars that the Catholics tried to retake the Holy Land according to International World History Project. The pope was in control of getting men for the war, and he did this by going to towns and giving speeches saying that God willed this war. Out of the Crusades, the Templars, also known as the Knights of the Temple, were born and rose to be the heroes of the wars. The Templars started with only nine, but grew to be one of the best military forces. For a person to be officially in the order, he had to become a Templar Knight. Even if a person was knighted somewhere else, he still had to be trained. The new pupil didn’t have to be royal. In fact, most of the Templars weren’t royal. When Templars were sworn into the order they had to hand over all of their riches and land. Not everyone could make it to the Templar rank, however; most failed to make the grade or dropped out. The reason why they were the heroes is because of their teaching for war because of that they were good in combat. The Templars Job when there wasn’t a big battle they had to patrol the roads to protect travelers. It did not matter where they were from they had to protect them unless attacked by the travelers then they had the rights to use self-defense according to Knights Templar History.
Templars had for their armory a sword, dagger, shield, lance and a hauberk with steel plates on the chest, back, knees and shoulders. They were not allowed to use bows it was cowardly way to fight. Since bows were effective they hired mercenaries to use bows for them. The Templars were not allowed to flee even if it was one Templar facing ten other men according to Knights Templar
KNIGHT At age seven a son of a noble family was sent to a nobleman or lord, often who was a relative. Here he was a page and taught how to ride a horse, and his manners. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to a knight. As the squire to the knight he would take care of his horse, help him put the knights armor on and keep it clean. In turn he was taught how to use a bow, carve meat, and other knightly skills. The squire would have to go into battle with the knight to help him when he was wounded or unhorsed. If the squire was successful he would be knighted at the age of 21. When there wasn't a war going on knight would have to practice, practice, and practice some more. They would wrestle, fight with blunt swords, do acrobatics, and also do sports like javelin and putting which is throwing a heavy stone as far as you can.
The First Crusade was called in 1096 by Pope Urban II. The reasons for the First Crusade was to help obtain Jerusalem known as the holy land. During this time period the Muslims were occupying Jerusalem. First Crusade contained peasants and knights’ whose ethnicities consist of Franks, Latin’s, and Celts which were all from the western part of Europe. To get peasants and knights to join Pope Urban II objectives in return of a spiritual reward called “remission of all their sins” which was to be redeemed of any sins the individual has committed. When sins are redeemed Crusaders believed that they will escape the torment of hell. When lords and knights joined the crusade they were known as military elites. Crusaders were known as soldiers of Christ.
The Military Orders, including the Templars and Hospitallers, were created to protect pilgrims on the route to Jerusalem, but grew into ranks of professional soldiers with a great presence in the East, answerable to the Papacy. These orders “grew rapidly and acquired castles at strategic points in the kingdom and northern states. […] They were soon established in Europe as well, they became international organizations, virtually independent, sanctioned and constantly supported by the papacy” (Madden). The Pope possessed, for the first time, a dedicated military force in Europe. These two outcomes indicate the growth of the Church’s power as a result of the First Crusade, and support the proposition that the Papacy intended it as a way for advancing its political and economic position.

After the first crusade two new military orders arose in Jerusalem. One, the Knights Hospitallers, or Knights of Saint John, whose task was to aid the wounded in Outremer, or the "land across the sea". Saint John's Ambulance Service derives from the Hospitaller legend. The second military order to arise was the Knights Templars, whose duty was to defend the pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land.
This group was known as the Peasant's Crusade, they did not have the training or discipline they would ahead of them. They often stole what they wanted and angered the Europeans and were killed. The Turks later slaughtered the survivors. The main armies that were sent by the pope were well trained French and Norman Knights. When they reached Constantinople, Byzantine forces joined the crusaders.
The First Crusade was called by Pope Urban II in November 1095. Urban made a simple proposal to his people: “Whoever for devotion alone, but not to gain honor or money, goes to Jerusalem to liberate the Church of God can substitute this journey for all penance.” This proposal sounded very appealing to many. There were several motivations behind the Church calling for the Crusades. Some of these motivations helped persuade the knights to take up arms and help reclaim the Holy Land. In order for the crusades to begin, the Christians needed to gather an army to travel and fight the forces of Muslims. With all the power being held by monarchies at this time, the church needed to be cleaver in order to gain troops to put their lives on the line. To gain the support of these warriors and dedication of men, Pope Urban II (1088-1099) challenged those morals of men by telling them to grab their weapons and join the holy war to recover the land of Jerusalem. It was not the challenge that convinced men to take part in this war. The promise of “immediate remission of sins” attracted the men to stand up for their religion and beliefs while at the same time, promising them a trip to heaven when life comes to an end. In the year 1095 the First Crusade was just beginning. Pope Urban II called Christians to liberate the Holy Land from Muslim oppressors. He promised indulgences and the gift of eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven for fighting in the holy war. Those that answered the call were peasants, beggars, the poor looking for riches and the unknown looking for glory. What started out as a pilgrimage to help fellow Christians secure their borders and repel foreign invaders soon became the first of many Holy Wars for the Kingdom of God.
Knights were an integral part of medieval society. They originally began with primitive warriors such as the Mongols who fought on horseback for added speed and power, but quickly advanced to chivalrous gentleman such as the Normans. Much has been written about medieval knights with the most famous being a series of legends about King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Arthur and his knights were the ultimate example of what a perfect knight should have been. They were brave and skilful in battle, but merciful to their enemies once vanquished. They were courteous to ladies, and never ate or drank to excess.
Despite all the crazy conspiracies these warriors had been tied to they kept everything they did a secret. Which is why so many people always have some kind of wild opinion of these Knights Of Templar. It seems they understood that only some people in this world should hold all its truth and more. They sparked so much controversy that not very many of their epics and romantics are told in exact truth. The Templars Despite all the twisted stories they were involved in were individually dirt poor god fearing humans.
The Knights Templars were a holy organization that made their purpose to safely guide anyone who wished to travel to Jerusalem (the Holy Land) safely for a fee. They also vowed to protect Jerusalem and any other land that was holy to them and their faith. After the First Crusade, the Knights Templar’s purpose became clear when the road to Jerusalem was no longer safe, due to the frequent robberies that the pilgrims encountered on their way to the Holy Land. The Knights templar were known for their control of most of the money in Europe, even though this was much later on in the organizations being, their incredible skill and determination in battle, and their tragic end to their organization, even though there are still some sects that practice their beliefs today.
The Crusades were great military missions embarked on by the Christian nations of Europe for the purpose of rescuing the Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the hands of the Moslems. The Crusades were considered Holy Wars (1). Their main target was the Moslems not the Jews, although campaigns were also waged against pagan Slavs, Jews, Russian and Greek orthodox Christians, Mongols, Cathars, Hussites, Waldensians Old Prussians, and political enemies of the popes (2). There were many Crusades some more significant than others, but in general the Crusades was an important event in the history of Medieval Europe.

Military duties included castle guard, serving in the lord's "bodyguard", and participating in battle if needed. Thus to be a successful knight they must follow these steps described in this text and follow up by continuing to follow the code of chivalry until death.
