The Klu Klux Klan, also known as the KKK, was founded in 1866, by a group of six ex-Confederate officers in Pulaski, Tennessee. The term Klu Klux Klan came from the root word “kuklos” which means “circle”, they added the assonant word “klan” and came up with the name “Klu Klux Klan”. The Klu Klux Klan was a set of three individual movements, and was set to support rebellious intransigent actions made by the white supremacists, in order to rebel against the blacks and the supporters of racial equality. Current group members of the Klan gathered in an assembly meeting and started the “Invisible Empire of the South.” They chose Nathan Bedford Forrest as the leader of the Klu Klux Klan. They’re second goal was to reinstate white supremacy in the states. Other campaigns organized by the Klan were the white Brotherhood and the Knights of the White Camelia, which was launched in 1867 in Louisiana. During the Reconstruction, more that 10 percent of the black legislators who were elected in 1867-1868 constitutional conventions, were targets of the violence made by the Klan, including seven who were murdered. Congress passed a law set to limit the violence and intimidation of the KKK. However, the KKK viewed its main objective accomplished from Democratic victories in the Southern state council during the 1870s, and were not alarmed of the new law. The Klan assisted in threatening black voters and sought to overturn newly elected Republican governments in the South. They would stage assemblies, marches, rallies, and would burn crosses. Members of the Klan disguised themselves by wearing white masks and robes. The Klan committed most of their acts at night, in hopes of defeating Radical Reconstruction.
