Downtown Discovery: Exploring Abandoned Spaces

“This place looks super abandoned.” Kinsey is super nervous as the class started to walk up to a building that is somewhere in downtown Cincinnati. The structure is sitting only a few feet from the street curb, standing between 4 to 5 stories tall. From the look of the condition of the building, I’m surprised it was still able to be used as a business. “Ready to go in?” Mr. Mansfield is grinning with amusement while Kinsey and our class mates start to walk to the door. The students are in awe as they walk through the lobby of Able Projects; which is a T-shirt screen printing shop. “This is the coolest place I’ve ever seen!” The class is ecstatic while we enter the first screen printing room. I now have my own Able Projects T-shirt. I go to lay my shirt in the dryer and hurry back to the class to watch them print their shirts. As I get to Mr. Mansfield, Ryan looks at the students and begins to tell them about the large skate park they have inside the building. “While your shirts dry, why don’t you kids go and have fun in the skate park.” We all rush to the door and to our amazement, the building really did have a huge indoor skate park. Only a few of the other students know how to skate. They were luckily allowed to bring their skateboards with them, with the addition to a medical waver signed by their parents. The rest of us went to sit on a skate ramp to watch the skaters fly quickly by our eyes, preforming amazing tricks. Sadly, we only stayed for an hour after my class finished our shirts. My favorite part about the fieldtrip was the ride home. Seeing all of my friends faces joyfully looking at the shirts they made. This is a memory they will never forget, plus they now have a souvenir to remind them of that day. It will always remain a special event of my life because of the time I was able to spend with my friends and my favorite teacher. If I could, I would try to organize another fieldtrip to screen print more
