The book of Matthew was written with many themes and purposes that show Jesus’ kingship, His Father’s Kingdom, and the millennial kingdom to come. However, one of the main themes of the book is showing Jesus Christ as King through His supernatural birth, miracles, power, and even His death. The birth of Jesus Christ was an indicator of His kingship through the miraculous conception. Jesus was not conceived from a human but by the Holy Spirit recorded by Matthew in chapter one verses eighteen through twenty-five. This also fulfills the prophecy found in Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.” As He rode the donkey into the city of Jerusalem the people laid down their clothes and cut branches to lay on the road. Jesus was no longer riding into Jerusalem being worshiped in His kingship but now the religious leaders plotted and schemed to have Jesus crucified. Jesus is presented before Pontius Pilate where He is asked if He is the King of the Jews and He answered “Thou sayest.” The soldiers mocked Jesus by placing a scarlet robe on Him with a crown of thorns and a reed in His right hand saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They clothed Him and led him away to be crucified. Matthew 27:37 says, “And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” The moment Jesus breathed His last the veil of the temple was torn in two, the earth quaked, graves were opened and the saints arose. “Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those thing that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.” Matthew
