As a sports psychologist, I expect to have clients who come to me for different reasons.
Some athletes seek a psychologist for fears of failure and performance outcome or help with making sure they’re mentally prepared for the big game. Sports psychologist, as well as other psychologists, play a huge role in assisting clients to access their full potential. Helping an athlete to create and obtain goals can impact his or her performance. There are three main types of goals, outcome, performance and process goals. Some athletes may want to figure out what external factors are causing the change in stress and then identify why. Even though found to be less effective, others would rather ignore all. In regards to Jamal, not being able to perform as aggressively discouraged him as a result of his lack of motivation he did not make a team. For us to get Jamal back on his A-game. He should take the time to asses what he could have done better performance wise, and then learn to take the coaches criticism and inquire how he could do better. Whether you’re an athlete or not it is vital to remain motivated because like with Jamal and many other people, lack of motivation will hinder your progress and result in failure of any related goals. However, to bring Jamal’s confidence and motivation back up he has three forms of self-talk to choose from task-specific relating to technique, encouragement and effort and mood words. As his sports psychologist I would recommend Encouragement and effort, at a time like this Jamal is a risk for never wanting to play basketball again. For example while he is playing on the freshmen team he can say to himself “starting from the bottom but I’ll be there” to note that even though he may not have made it on his desired team he will work hard to make it there next year. If Jamal says this in combination with physically working hard he is more likely to increase his motivation and improve his skills. It will benefit Jamal and all other athletes if they practiced progressive relaxation before and after games. Progressive relaxation will require Jamal to isolate himself and physically lay out flat with limbs spread out. Then he’d have to tense up different muscles and then relax them. The objective of this is to be able to quickly defuse when an athlete feels like his mind and body are tensing up or stressing.
