In the modern world, people are under control by strong individuals who are capable of govern the nation they are leading through both simple and complex situations. Being a leader is a tough position to be in, for they are expected to make critical and analytical decisions. At times, the leader is envisioned as a perfect role model for everyone to look up to. However, because every human being is imperfect, leaders strive to be perfect to improve and satisfy the people they are leading. A leader has a responsibility of bringing his or her nation to success. The principles listed in The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli states that cruelty and stinginess are important qualities that a leader needs in order to “bring him safety and well-being.” A modern dictator who applies this principle is Kim Jong Un, a ruler of Communist North Korea. Kim Jong Un is a leader who uses threat and egotism in order to keep his people to work for him, such as extreme labor, lack of essential resources, physical and mental torture, etc. Because of fear, North Koreans are beginning to lose hope in their dictator to treat them fairly. Having no faith in the improvement of their condition, North Koreans are escaping the brutal condition by fleeing to China or South Korea, becoming disloyal to their leader. Machiavelli states that a leader “cannot neglect any kind of lavishness” if the ruler wants to keep his or her people. However, the people of North Korea proves that not providing any kind of care and generosity brought to the loss and respect of the dictator’s people. Not only is Kim Jong Un viewed as a malicious leader by his people, but also by most of the world. According to Machiavelli, a leader should have “a mind ready to turn in any direction as Fortune’s winds and the variability of affairs require,” meaning the leader may choose the wrong decision that he thinks is righteous. This technique has proved that it is not effective; Adolf Hitler was a prejudicial ruler who persecuted and tormented innocent people for his own pleasure. His actions only brought conflicts and chaos around the world. Unlike him, a tolerant leader, Mahatma Gandhi, was able to lead his followers in a peaceful manner to fight for justice and independence. Being a kind and gentle ruler does not mean the leader is vulnerable.
