Though Karl Marx’s theory of alienation contains value in examining the modern worker, it does not apply to the remarkable few whom avoid estrangement and ultimately benefit from capitalist society. For example, pop icon Beyoncé Knowles is not alienated due to the immense power she obtained that allows her to express more than just labour. As she does not own the means of production, Beyoncé cannot be considered a bourgeoisie, yet she escapes the alienation afflicting the proletariat. Because of her unique circumstances, Beyoncé becomes unaffected by capitalism’s suppression of the species-essence. To begin, Marx claims, “the worker puts his life into the object; but now his life no longer belongs to him but to the object” (72). The product that the worker makes becomes a part of the alien external market rather than something he owns. This sort of alienation comes from the worker inserting his mind and body into the object without obtaining something comparable in return. Such a condition leads to how “the more the worker produces, the less he has to consume; the more value he creates, the more valueless, the more unworthy he becomes” (73). A positive feedback loop occurs where the worker becomes increasingly alienated with each additional product draining him more. While the product grows in value, the worker regresses and loses more of himself due to capitalism’s refusal to fulfill his greater needs. To give a basic understanding, Marx theorizes, “the whole character of a species—its species character—is contained in the character of its life-activity; and free, conscious activity is man’s species character” (76). All animals have a species character, but humans have one considerably more complex. The sentience of human beings makes their species-essence have more intricate needs, such as the activity of purposeful production. However, in “tearing away from man the object of his production, therefore, estranged labour tears from him his species life, his real species objectivity” (76). Capitalism objectifies the species life of humans, changing what was once natural into work. Production in capitalist society distances a human’s species objective from its original form. Consequently, man’s consciousness “is thus transformed by estrangement in such a way that the species life becomes for him a means” (77). Capitalist society inverts the relationship between species life and his existence. Instead of living for a meaningful production of objects and ideas, a worker must produce objects in order to sustain his life and existence. The species life of workers becomes completely corrupted into a force driving capitalist production rather than vitalizing the individual to fulfill a more meaningful
Since the worker’s product is owned by someone else, the worker regards this person, the capitalist, as alien and hostile. The worker feels alienated from and antagonistic toward the entire system of private property through which the capitalist appropriates both the objects of production for his own enrichment at the expense of the worker and the worker’s sense of identity and wholeness as a human being.
“The need of a constantly expanding market for its products (.) chases the bourgeois over the whole surface of the globe” (Marx, 212) and creates a world that cannot exist without the separation of workers and owners and competition for the lowest price. The struggle between the bourgeois and the proletariat begins when the labor of the worker becomes worth less than the product itself. Marx proposes that our social environment changes our human nature. For example, capitalism separates us from the bourgeois and proletariat because it alienates us from our true human nature, our species being, and other men.

Marx in The Communist Manifesto explains what capitalism is and what it is to be a capitalist: "To be a capitalist is to have not only a purely personal but a social status in production. Capital is a collective product, and only by the united action of many members, nay, in the last resort, only by the united action of all members of society, can it be set in motion." (Marx, K., Engels, F. and Berman, M. (2011)). Marx believed that society was beginning to break away from nature as a source of economical support. In the past, humans had relied heavily on agriculture to support themselves but with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, new technology began to replace old farming techniques and created new factory jobs in cities. Marx had rather extreme views on the extent to which nature in his time had become humanized as a result of human labor.[1] He commented that, “ Even the objects of the simplest “ sensuous certainty” are only given him through social development, industry and commercial intercourse.”[2] "Throughout their labor, humans shape their own material environment, thereby transforming the very nature of human existence in the process.”[3]
The concept of alienation plays a significant role in Marx's early political writing, especially in the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1848, but it is rarely mentioned in his later works. This implies that while Marx found alienation useful in investigating certain basic aspects of the development of capitalist society, it is less useful in putting forward the predictions of the collapse of capitalism. The aim of this essay is to explain alienation, and show how it fits into the pattern of Marx's thought. It will be concluded that alienation is a useful tool in explaining the affect of capitalism on human existence. In Marx's thought, however, the usefulness of alienation it is limited to explanation. It does not help in either predicting the downfall of capitalism, or the creation of communism.

When Karl Marx first penned his shaping works on communism, he assumed that the relationship between workers and capital would always be opposing. While most rejected his overall theories, they did not argue with the basic idea that the interests of workers would always be at odds with those of owners. This is one of Marx's only theories that has proven to be true.
