Recommended: Brown vs. Board of Education

On Tuesday morning we left at 5:30 to head to Topeka. It was an early morning and a long bus ride. It was quite in the morning on the bus because everyone was mostly sleeping. Once we got to Great Bend we stopped and ate breakfast at McDonald's. After everyone ate we got back on the road for more miles to go. It took us about 351 miles to get there. In the two days we were there we visited the Kansas History Museum, the Brown vs. Board of Education building, and the Kansas State Capitol. The Kansas History Museum was very interesting, it had many displays were you could see what some of the things looked like. It was full of facts about famous trails, indians, trains, settlers and many other things. I learned that the toys some of the kids …show more content…

Board of Education was very astonishing! I was very surprised to find out that in Topeka the schools for the blacks and whites were actually equal. The whole time we were learning about separate but equal I thought that the schools were very harsh for the blacks rather than the whites. I learned that Brown vs. Board of Education was to make it equal for the blacks not just in schools but in the society. The building that we were in used to be one of the schools that blacks had to go to. The Kansas State Capitol was a very big building filled with history of Kansas. It had facts about when Kansas became a state and how we got some of our laws and things about our flags. The walls had art work on them that was very interesting. They also had designs in the copper on the walls that was very unique. We could go up to the very top of the building and I chose to go up to the top. It was very high and I was very scared but once I got to the top it was very pretty. I would have regretted it if I did not go to the top. The Eisenhower Museum was one of my favorites. It had many things that I did not know about president Eisenhower. I learned that his nickname was Ike and when he was elected he won by many votes. He even had his own song about him! Eisenhower was a very important general in the war. I learned about lots of old guns and about some of the clothes they wore back

    Board of Education was a United States Supreme Court case in 1954 that the court declared state laws to establish separate public schools for black segregated public schools to be unconstitutional. Brown v. Board of Education was filed against the Topeka, Kansas school board by plaintiff Oliver Brown, parent of one of the children that access was denied to Topeka’s none colored schools. Brown claimed that Topeka 's racial segregation violated the Constitution 's Equal Protection Clause because, the city 's black and white schools were not equal to each other. However, the court dismissed and claimed and clarified that segregated public schools were "substantially" equal enough to be constitutional under the Plessy doctrine. After hearing what the court had said to Brown he decided to appeal the Supreme Court. When Chief Justice Earl Warren stepped in the court spoke in an unanimous decision written by Warren himself stating that, racial segregation of children in public schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which states that "no state shall make or enforce any law which shall ... deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." Also congress noticed that the Amendment did not prohibit integration and that the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees equal education to both black and white students.     As history cascades through an hourglass, the changing, developmental hands of time are shrouded throughout American history. This ever-changing hourglass of time is reflected in the process of maturation undertaken by western America in the late nineteenth century. Change, as defined by Oxford’s Dictionary, is “To make or become different through alteration or modification.” The notion of change is essential when attempting to unwind the economic make-up of Kansas in the 1880’s and 1890’s. Popular culture often reveres the American cowboy, which has led him to become the predominate figure in America’s “westering” experience (Savage, p3). However, by 1880 the cowboy had become a mythical figure rather than a presence in western life. The era of the cowboy roaming the Great Plains had past and farmers now sought to become the culturally dominant figure and force in the American West. Unlike the cowboys, farmers were able to evolved, organizing and establishing the Populist Party. The farmers’ newly formed political organization provided them with a voice, which mandated western reform. Furthermore, the populist ideas spread quickly and dominated western thought in the 1880’s and 1890’s. The period of the 1880’s and 1890’s marked the end of the American cowboy and gave farmers a political stronghold that would forever impact the modernization of the West.
