Kalief Browder Case: The Milgram Obedience Case

I’m familiar with Kalief Browder case because I discussed the legal issues involving the case in my criminal justice class, he was a teenager who was arrested mistaking for another person, accused of stealing a backpack, for a witness, he voluntary went to the precinct as per the police officer request and was arrested and sent to Rikers Island correctional facility , everything, denied bail because he was in probation , back and forth from court because the attorney, prosecutor and judge didn’t agree with a specific date to provide the evidence. He was claiming to be innocent at all times but he didn’t have a good legal representation, his lawyer never visit him in jail, as punishment he was in solitary confine for 2 years consecutives, …show more content…

All the trauma suffering for this young male ends for him to make a decision to take his own life hanging himself in his own house , unfortunately this time he actually succeed and died.
The Milgram obedience study was an example of the effect that can cause to be in prison/ jail, how officers used their power to abuse inmate, to feel that their in control. As the article mentioned the Department of Correction report that he was injury during the use of force by officer, he suffered a facial contusion. It was also mention in the article that The United State Attorney releases a report denouncing the living condition for adolescent jail on Rikers, However nothing have been done to results those issues. Also the inmates want to have control over other inmates, the gangs inside as well as the overcrowded condition inside the jail, creates more problems which was one of the situation that Kalief Brower has to face, causing so much psychological damages in him. Been under this type of circumstances, change his moods, maybe low his self-esteem , feeling lonely was ,developing depression which was probably one of the reason why he wanted to end his …show more content…

The time he spend in solitary confine transform him a distance and lonely and disconnect person who will need help to reintegrated in society and been able to function normally. His was depressed due to compare himself with his friends form high school, which was able to graduate on time and were college ready. He was seeing himself at a worthless, without education, job, money, leaving with his mother at his ages when he was supposed to have his own place already.
He was suffering from the side effect of been in jail and no one did absolutely nothing to help him, he was clearly in a deep depression, the flashback about his time in jail, was torturing him, he was need of mental health intervention. He was probably going through post-traumatic stress and depression and didn’t receive the proper treatment. This situation couldn’t been avoided if the court system weren’t be so neglect as well as if he would be referred for a psycho social and psychiatric
