The question of how long solitude will turn someone insane has been in the minds of many scientists for a while. Michael Stevens, a graduate from University of Chicago with a bachelors in neuroscience, had the idea to go in complete isolation to track his mental stability. He started to lose his mind in under 48 hours and could not find the difference between reality and his imagination. This same change can be seen in William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies. The boys that land on the island start to change physically and mentally due to their surroundings. After Ralph is elected leader, there is a sudden shift in Jack’s mood. From the beginning he decides to run off on his own for no apparent reason and nobody does anything about it. This is the first sign that Simon’s mental stability is declining. It gets dramatically worse after the pig head is left for the beast. As he stumbles upon it he starts to talk to it mentally then realizes he is speaking aloud. Simon speaking aloud to the head is a great signal that he is officially insane. While the beast is talking to Simon it says “Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill” (Golding 143). From this Simon momentarily becomes sane when he realizes the only beast on the island is fear. Simon is the character with the least sanity but the reader can see that he is the only character that knows the truth. In William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies the descent of the kid’s change due to their surroundings is easily seen. When Jack decides that hunting is the only thing that matters and only focuses on the thrill of the next kill, it shows how he changed from the time that he landed. Simon changed just as much if not more. As Simon talks to the dead pig head and hears drastically people change physically and mentally due to their surroundings.responses it is seen that he has finally been pushed over the edge.
