The question of how long solitude will turn someone insane has been in the minds of many scientists for a while. Michael Stevens, a graduate from University of Chicago with a bachelors in neuroscience, had the idea to go in complete isolation to track his mental stability. He started to lose his mind in under 48 hours and could not find the difference between reality and his imagination. This same change can be seen in William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies. The boys that land on the island start to change physically and mentally due to their surroundings. After Ralph is elected leader, there is a sudden shift in Jack’s mood. From the beginning he decides to run off on his own for no apparent reason and nobody does anything about it. This is the first sign that Simon’s mental stability is declining. It gets dramatically worse after the pig head is left for the beast. As he stumbles upon it he starts to talk to it mentally then realizes he is speaking aloud. Simon speaking aloud to the head is a great signal that he is officially insane. While the beast is talking to Simon it says “Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill” (Golding 143). From this Simon momentarily becomes sane when he realizes the only beast on the island is fear. Simon is the character with the least sanity but the reader can see that he is the only character that knows the truth. In William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies the descent of the kid’s change due to their surroundings is easily seen. When Jack decides that hunting is the only thing that matters and only focuses on the thrill of the next kill, it shows how he changed from the time that he landed. Simon changed just as much if not more. At this point in the book the group of school boys who have crash-landed on this uninhabited island, have found a course of action. Unfortunately, not all the boys are working hard to accomplish what needs to get done. In the middle of the story, there is a huge rebellion. Jack disagrees with Ralph’s priorities and proposes: “I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too’ ” (Golding 183).
Furthermore, Simon’s gifted power of true inner visionary to look beneath the souls is revealed, “..Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward sight the picture of a human at once heroic and sick” (112). As the boys continue to indignantly quarrel and give the beast a form and figure, Simon visualizes the beast in man himself. Thus, he loses his former innocence when he realizes the ‘darker’ side of mankind, which the boys named as the beast and understands that evil is inherent in all humans. Furthermore, his eyes represent mystical wisdom and knowledge as well as magnifying lenses to see clear pictures of the obnoxious happenings such as, “The tangle of the lines showed him the mechanics of this parody; he examined the white nasal bones, the teeth, the colours of corruption” (162). Out of all the boys present, he is the only one who receives the opportunity to see the true illusion of the beast, adding more comprehension to his understanding of the beast that the more the bitter acts of violence are committed, the more the beast will come alive on the island. This also shows his ‘superego’ personality, consisting of a fully developed mind of social and parental values. With these values, he understands the difference between the right and wrong; savage and civility and is also both naturally good willed and civilized. His identity of a keen observer appears when he comprehends that on the surface, the island is extremely peaceful and calming, but the inside is where the roots of brutality grow which slyly evoke the inner savage present in all humans. Moreover, Simon’s character also has a touch of spirituality which is revealed when he hallucinates his conversation with the Lord of the Flies, where Lord of the Flies is symbolized as the devil and Simon as Jesus. Simon has a spiritual perception, a mystical connection to nature that none other characters possess. He also makes it clear that the beast real identity is the evilness which exists inside everyone. When Piggy is killed, Jack doesn’t seem to care. In fact, he takes credit for it. Jack says on page 181, “See? See? That’s what you’ll get! I meant that!” I think that Jack and this point is more worried about losing the respect of his tribe and seeming weak than the fact that someone was just obliterated in front of him. This shows that he doesn't care about anything but leading his tribe, killing pigs, and killing Ralph. When he becomes obsessed with these things, it really shows how far gone he is. Jack is obsessed with killing Ralph and will do anything to kill him. In chapter 12, Jack is so focused on killing Ralph that he sets the forest on fire to try to smoke him out. Jack resents Ralph’s power and following Ralph’s rules, while also disregarding what is asked of him, creating tension between the two. Jack constantly tries to turn the others against Ralph and undermine his opinion. When Jack does not do what is asked of him, it sparks conflict: “I was chief, and you were going to do what I said. When Ralph blows the conch, Jack is introduced to the reader for the first time. He is represented as an audacious and selfish boy who likes to order others around when he says "I ought to be chief, because I'm chapter chorister and head boy"(Goldberg p.22). It also confirms his hunger for power and wanting control over everything. His choleric and petulant personality can be seen when he says "Shut up, Fatty."(p.23), also revealing that he is rude and inconsiderate of others. Despite his obnoxious personality, his conscious of civilization keeps him from killing the first pig they see. He even recommends that the boys should have rules to keep things in order.
Ralph, the first character introduced to the audience, is probably the most likable character in the entire story. Although he does not ponder such deeply like Piggy, is not as spiritual like Simon, or as energetic as Jack, there is something in him that attracts the audience. Ralph serves as the protagonist of the story. He is described as being a playful, innocent child in the beginning, but towards the end he matures significantly. In the first chapter where he takes his clothes off and goes swimming like any child would do, he seems to be Adam in the Garden of Eden, a child left to play with the nature.
In Chapter 8 Jack says “He’s like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn’t a proper chief.” He says this because Jack thinks his point of view is the right one, and it can only be the right one. This is similar to dictatorships in the past when people believe their right and anyone who doesn’t agree is the enemy. Later in the book Jack tries to get more followers by promising them psychological needs. Jack states “We’ve killed a pig and we’ve got meat. You can come and eat with us if you like.” Jack is trying to take away any of Ralph’s remaining supporters, so that Ralph is forced to follow him when all he has left is Piggy, Samneric, and a few clueless littluns. Later in this book Ralph is on his own a few hours after Piggy dies, he is considering joining Jack’s tribe because he will have food and protection. In the forest he thinks about the thought of eating fruit, and then remembering the feast and that maybe they would let him back. After that he realizes that the hunters killed Piggy and Simon, so they would kill him
When Jack loses the election to become chief to Ralph, it becomes apparent that Jack is schismatic and wholeheartedly intends to act against Ralph’s actions and decisions. From small nuances such as churlish remarks to fights, it is obvious that Jack intends to eventually either dethrone Ralph or form his own tribe. In one instance, Ralph assigns Jack a very simplistic task of watching the fire on the mountain, yet Jack decides that his appetence for blood and meat is more important than fulfilling his duty to the fire. People are privileged to live in an advanced stage of development known as civilization. In a civilization, one’s life is bound by rules that are meant to tame its savage natures. A humans possesses better qualities because the laws that we must follow instill order and stability within society. This observation, made by William Golding, dictates itself as one of the most important themes of Lord of the Flies. The novel demonstrates the great need for civilization ion in life because without it, people revert back to animalistic natures.
Towards the middle of Simon's stay on the island, he started to realize that he truly was different from the others. Every time he tried to talk to the other children, his 'effort fell about him in ruins; the laughter beat him cruelly and he shrank away defenseless to his seat.';(89) Just when he thought he had been accepted he embarrassed himself again, 'When he bashed into a tree Ralph looked sideways impatiently and Robert sniggered.';(104) They were getting restless with his behavior.

Fatty and Jack smacked Piggy's head" (Golding 78). Jack is a lost boy who begins to discover the evil within him. When he proposes to the group that he should be the new chief, they do not respond in his favor, and Jack runs away, hurt and rejected. He swallows his hurt ego and throws all of his energy into the only thing he seems to know how to do - hunting. He puts on face paint and hides his conscience. This changes him into a savage, evil, The colorful mask allows Jack to forget everything he was taught back in England. "The mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness" (Golding 69). As the plot progresses he becomes less and less attached to any societal norms. Near the end of the novel, he feels no shame about the deaths of Simon and Piggy, or his attempt to kill Ralph. & nbsp; Another difference found is that Ralph symbolizes innocence, whereas Jack symbolizes experience and the inner shadow that Golding believes Ralph, Piggy and Simon represent the good side of the boys. Simon is pure, and the only one who realizes what the beast really is. Piggy is the voice of reason and stands for the world the boys once knew- adults, discipline, rules and civilization. As chief, Ralph knows right from wrong. When everyone followed Jack except for Piggy, Samneric and himself, he did not just give up and follow what he knew was wrong, he tried to reason with the rest of the boys and tried to talk some sense into them. At the end of the novel though, he too realizes that man is not a kind creature by nature. "Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man' followed, regardless of reason or morals. "
