Family plays an important part in juvenile delinquency. The way an individual's family responds and behaves in certain situations forms the types of individual's that we become. Individuals and the choices they make cannot be understood without considering the social contexts in which they live and act. (Elrod & Ryder, 2014). The family plays a key role in child development and social behavior. Between communities, school, peer groups, and socializing institutions influence delinquency for many different aspects and reasons. (Elrod & Ryder, 2014). For instance, the family that a juvenile is born into decides their economic status political views, and which schools and institutions they are privy to. The overall health and function of a family can be a leading factor into whether or not a child enters into the juvenile justice system. (Elrod & Ryder, 2014). The presence or absence of a father in the home is shown to have a significant impact on whether or not a child becomes a delinquent. Especially in cases where the child is a minority. Although this evidence was based off of official data the emphasis is not completely on whether the child has both parents at home but on the value of the relationship within. Family socialization is also important in delinquency. (Elrod & Ryder, 2014). Touching, holding, kissing, and listening to them provides security and shows them that they are loved. These socializations skills also show them cultural roles and adult responsibilities in life. Scientists believe that non-intact family structures during childhood leave a negative effect on adult civil engagement. (Hener, Rainer & Siedler, 2016).
