Cheryl Miller was truly a pioneer in women's basketball. She played her high school days at Riverside Polytechnic High school where she was a four year varsity letter winner and led her team to a 132-4 record. In 1981, she was awarded the Dial Award for the national high school scholar athlete of the year. She is named an All-American 4 times by Parade Magazine. She was the first player, male or female, to accomplish this feat. She averaged 39 points and 15 rebounds all throughout high school. She even owns the record for the highest amount of points scored in a basketball game by any male or female with 105 (Breaking News). Even in her career at the University Of Southern California (USC) she accomplished amazing things. She is sixth all time in NCAA history in career points with 3,018. She is third all-time in rebounding with 1,534 (Breaking News). She also has two NCAA titles as well as two tournament MVP's in both of those years. She holds eight records at USC. She also has three Olympic Gold medals. She is also the first USC player, male or female, to have her number retired. (Breaking News). After a brief stint as a professional basketball player, she went on to take the head coaching job at her Alma Mater. She is now an extremely popular broadcaster for TNT Sports.

Earl Lloyd was probably the most courageous player of all time. Some people know him as “The Big Cat” others know him as the first African-American to play in an NBA basketball game with the whites; he changed the way people think and look at basketball and black players and coaches. Earl Lloyd loved basketball from a very young age. Earl had two brothers older than him which was Earnest and Theodore. Earl was very dedicated from a very young age. With his high school team he took them to a state championship and won. After high school Earl went off and took his talents to West Virginia State College. While Earl was there his sophomore year they went 33-0 which is a perfect season. Earl’s team won back to back CIAA conference championships and tournament championships.
The athlete I chose is Natasha Watley. She is a professional softball player and the first African-American female to play on the USA softball team in the Olympics. She’s a former collegiate 4-time First Team All-American who played for the UCLA Bruins, the USA Softball Women’s National Team, and for the USSSA Pride. She helped the Bruins will multiple championships and also holds numerous records and one of the few players to bat at least .400 with 300 hits, 200 runs, and 100 stolen bases. She’s also the career hits leader in the National Pro Fast pitch. She won the gold medal in the 2004 summer Olympics and a silver in the Beijing Olympics. She was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.
She led the team to a Conference championship and a State Championship. As a Senior she was the #1 player in the nation, averaged a triple double with 31 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. For the second consecutive year in history, she led the team to a state championship and led the nation in scoring. All four years in high school she was selected to be on the all-state team, all-region team, and all-conference team. During the summers of her High School years she would continue practicing and playing for an AAU team.
One famous quote from Barbara Jordan is “If you’re going to play a game properly, you’d better know every rule .” Barbara Jordan was an amazing woman. She was the first African American Texas state senator. Jordan was also a debater, a public speaker, a lawyer, and a politician. Barbara Jordan was a woman who always wanted things to be better for African Americans and for all United States citizens. “When Barbara Jordan speaks,” said Congressman William L.Clay, “people hear a voice so powerful so, awesome...that it cannot be ignored and will not be silenced.”

Turn on ESPN, and there are many female sports reporters, and many reports on female athletes. Flip through Sports Illustrated, and female athletes are dotted throughout the magazine. Female athletes star in the commercials. Female athletes are on the cover of newspapers. Millions of books have been sold about hundreds of female athletes. However, this has not always been the case. The number of females playing sports nowadays compared to even twenty years ago is staggering, and the number just keeps rising. All the women athletes of today have people and events from past generations that inspired them, like Babe Didrikson Zaharias, the All-American Professional Girls Baseball League, Billie Jean King, and the 1999 United States Women’s World
Bo grew up in a town named Bessemer Alabama and was born on November 30th, 1962. For Bo, life was all about making it to college. That was so because out of the 10 children his mother, Florence Bond, had, not one had made it to college. Bo was the only child to attend college. As a child he excelled in baseball, Football, and Track, two of which he went professional in. Having been such a freak athlete Jackson earned a choice of almost any college in the country on an athletic scholarship. He knew he had a lot to choose from and could attend any college or university, but he wanted to stay within his home state so it was down to two schools, Auburn University and the University of Alabama.

Superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Born with hyper-athletic genes, Odell’s father Odell Beckham Sr. was a starting running back at LSU, and his mother Heather Van Norman was an All-American track runner at LSU also. Having two great athletes for parents paved the way for Odell to learn firsthand what it would take to be a successful athlete. He attended high school at Isidore Newman in New Orleans where he excelled in football, basketball and track. After four years of standout performance, he became a U.S. Army All-American. Fanny “Bobbie” Rosenfeld is the most historically and culturally significant Canadian sport figure. Rosenfeld was a pioneer for women’s athletics, and was a role model to many young girls and working class women. When at a time when women in sport was not considered proper, Fanny broke down barriers, competing in high levels of softball, hockey, and basketball and track. She was a women of firsts, she helped define Canadian women in sport.

Pat Summitt has been diagnosed with Dementia, early-onset Alzheimer’s type. Even though she no longer makes the play calls or runs the practices, she can still be found on the court yelling at players until her face turns blue. Summitt is very much still a large part of the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team, and considers herself the “big gun”; her official title is Head Coach Emeritus. Her constant rock is her son, Ross “Tyler” Summitt, her pride, joy and greatest accomplishment; although Summitt did not want her son to follow in her footsteps, he is currently the head coach at Louisiana Tech and has succeeded expectations. A game that started with eighteen men in a ymca gymnasium in springfield massachusetts has grown into a game that more than 300 million people play worldwide.
