Josef Mengele is regarded as one of the most vicious and heinous killers in all of history. He tortured children, twins, and the women of Auschwitz. Mengele was raised into hatred, and was taught that the German race was the master race. He was mentored by Nazi collaborators, and was taught hereditary and racial deficiency. Mengele’s remorseless killing led to him being nicknamed the angel of death.
Born March 16, 1911, Josef Mengele was born into a farming family. He was loved by the townspeople for his wit and humor. Wanting to make a name for himself in his community, he earned a Ph.D. in hereditary biology. Josef was mentored by known Nazi collaborator Otman Verschuer. Verschuer taught Mengele eugenics, selective breeding, and sparked Josef’s interest. Mengele was educated to believe the German race was the master race, and would do anything in his power to prove this. Mengele’s hatred for “inferior races” was the root of his experimentation at Auschwitz (Lagnado and Dekel).
Mengele enlisted in the German army as a ground infantry soldier. He was serving his country in Russia when he was struck with a round. Unable to fight any longer, he was transferred to Auschwitz and made chief physician (“Josef Mengele USHM”). Mengele received recommendation letters from his past mentors, securing the physician job at Auschwitz
(Lagnado and Dekel). Mengele’s job description included: selection, experimentation, and racial and hereditarian studies. Mengele's pseudo-scientific research would only be made worse by his relentless and heartless killing (“Josef Mengele ‘German Physician’ ”).
Mengele’s search for racial engineering drove him to madness. Mengle showed up to “work” in his finest suit every day, without a hair out of place. Jo...

In 1985, CANDLES, led Auschwitz survivors on a tour of the camp. They walked the path of death, and witnessed the chambers where their loved ones were killed. The survivors held a mock trial of Josef Mengele, where they finally were able to tell their story
(Lagnado and Dekel).
Josef Mengele will go down in history as the most heinous and gruesome killers of all time. Mengele tortured men, women, children, and subjected them to awful conditions. Mengele’s relentless killing and madness led to a life of despair and hatred. Mengele had gone mad with power, and used science as an excuse to please himself. Josef Mengele did not contribute anything to the scientific community, instead he practiced pseudo-scientific studies in order to please himself. Mengele’s killing and torture, only backed up his Angel of Death nickname.
