How is symbolization used in Internal sunshine of spotless mind? Symbolization plays a very important role in the 2004 movie; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind directed by Michel Gondry and featuring Jim Carey and Kate Winslet. There's not an intricate costume design in the movie, however, the clothes are still important. We see Joel wearing very tight clothing often, so much so that if he did up one more button, he'd die from suffocation. The type of tight clothing he wears is the type that makes you think he is really uptight. Joel also wears a green sweater with the white undershirt which makes him look to have an in between formal and casual look and it looks uncomfortable. Names are also another form of symbolization in ESOTSM. Joel Barish is deliberately a very boring name, and the first name tends to drag on, not sure if it's a diphthong or two separate vowels. The low vowels at the beginning of both names sound depressed, and the lethargic "ish" at the end doesn't really help. The name makes it so that even if you didn't know Joel, you could probably get a pretty good sense of the kind of person he might be, depressed and boring. Clementine Kruczynski, however, is a more upbeat, exciting name. It is more energised and interesting. It has a rhythm, and each syllable seems to have its own emphasis. Clem's name isn't just about its sound: it also means something. The name Clementine comes from the word "clemency," which means "mercy." However, Clem doesn't think her names meaning describes her accurately, claiming; “She's more the Agent Orange type".
