Jo Goodwin Parker’s essay ‘’ What is Poverty” is about parker who has personally experienced the life of poverty. Parker explain her story from being a child till becoming an adult. The struggles parker was having were hurtful to read. The way she describes her own living arrangement, Parker resides in poverty. In the essay parker says listen to the story of what poverty is. Parker proceeds to talk about the different ways she was living in poverty. She continued talking about the lack of health conditions she and her children suffered, Such as the worms and runny noses. She did the right thing by not running off leave her children even though she had no ability to take care of them.

I imaged parker and her children with no hot water. Parker wanted readers to know only if she had hot water she would appreciate it. Tears started to roll down my face as I thought about my children not having any hot water and going through the pain parker has suffered. I have prayed and thanked Jesus Christ for giving me a gracious path. Once I was in the dollar store buying soap all I could think about was parker kids living with bacteria all over their flesh. It was disgusting, unhealthy, and miserable.
Parker did not have anyone to help her. She had no husband, no family, or friends that would help her. The essay she wrote make a person see the mental and physical effects in her life. I believed if Parker had the help from someone who cared about her situation she would have been able to prosper. But instead of helping her they turned her away.
In conclusion, Parker restates “What is Poverty”. Poverty is waking up in dirt, illness stained mattresses, and living in smells that never leaves. She wants the reader to pay close attention to how harsh she and the kids are living. Parker explain there is no hope for the poor so people can understand poverty. As a mother, I could not image my children dirty and sick with runny noses all the time. Due to Parker writing this essay may help people understand others are living in poverty and to give help to someone who needs
