Jimmy’s early life was rough, along with his college and his first couple of years in the NBA. Through all that Jimmy has amazing accolades and awards. Actually telling his friends that his goal was to get a college degree. Even Jimmy had mind changes at Marquette; he wanted to leave Marquette because coach Buzz Williams was hard on Jimmy. At Marquette Jimmy was 2009-10 big east honorable mention and 2010-11 big east honorable mention. After his 4th year in college and getting his degree, Jimmy entered the NBA draft with high hopes and dreams! In Newark, New Jersey on June 23rd, 2011 Jimmy Butler was selected in the NBA draft. Jimmy went the last pick of the first round. The NBA draft isn’t like any other sport when it comes to the draft. There are only two rounds with thirty picks a piece. Jimmy went 1st round 30th pick the Chicago Bull! Arguably the greatest team to play the game of basketball. The 2011-12 season was Jimmy’s rookie year in the NBA. Every basketball players is to make it to the NBA, even mine. Jimmy’s first season in the NBA was not how he pictured it. His rookie year he was averaging about 8 minute’s a game, not enough minute’s to make game changing plays. Jimmy played 42 of the 82 games his rookie season. 23 of them games he didn’t get off the bench. He only averaged 2.6 points and 1.3 rebounds a game. Lebron James is a well known professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Lebron is often referred to as one of the greatest to ever pick up a basketball. Lebron makes money from playing basketball but a substantial amount of his income comes from sponsorships and endorsement deals with outside brands. This is where his social media plays a huge part of his life.
Jim Valvano, otherwise known as “Jimmy V”, was a college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. This paper will cover Jimmy and define his true leadership qualities. Jimmy was an icon in the sports world not only for his coaching ability. He taught the world that leaders need a vision, leaders need to connect with their followers, and that leaders learn from their followers. Jimmy defied the rules and transformed his players into exceptionally good players and even better people. He taught more than basketball to his players and reached outside of his coaching arena to touch the lives of people across the world.
In spring of 1991, the University of Michigan signed what was arguably the best recruiting class in the history of college basketball. Coach Steve Fisher signed five of the nation's top prospects - Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson. Webber and Rose were childhood friends from Detroit who turned into McDonald's All Americans. The 6'9" power forward, Webber, was regarded as the number one player in the nation. Rose was a tall guard standing 6'7", who played like a young Magic Johnson. Howard, another McDonald's All American, was a multi-talented forward from Chicago. LeBron James displayed the natural talent of an athlete at a young age, allowing him to attend the top school for basketball. In 2003, he was drafted to The Cleveland Cavaliers as a large forward, dominating at an early age. During that impressive season, James was awarded the NBA Rookie of the Year, breaking Cleveland history as the youngest player to accept this honor. At only twenty years old, James averaged over 20 points per game, slowly building his reputation. He continued to outshine every player in the NBA, averaging 30 points per game.

This great nation of awesome power and abundant resources is losing the battle against homelessness. The casualties can be seen on the street corners of every city in American holding an ?I will work for food? sign. Homeless shelters and rescue missions are at full capacity. There is no room at the inn for the nation?s indigent. Anyone who has studied this issue understands that homelessness is a complex problem. Communities continue to struggle with this socio-economic problem while attempting to understand its causes and implement solutions. The public and private sectors of this country are making a difference in the lives of the homeless by addressing the issues of housing, poverty and education.

Some of the accounts from Travels with Lisbeth (1993), a book by Lars Eighner, depicted what he went through and what he found during his homeless state. A homeless person must eat and sleep but may not know where or when this might happen next. The human will to survive enabled Eighner to eat food from a dumpster, reach out to other for handouts, and sleep in places other than a bed with covers.

“The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
