Jesus Christ Superstar, with music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is a rock opera portraying the struggles between Jesus Christ and Judas Iscariot. The play begins with Jesus’, played by John Legend, entering the stage. His disciples are shown waiting for him and begin praising him when he appears. Judas, played by Brandon Victor Dixon, enters the stage warning Jesus’ that his following may be seen as a threat to the Roman Empire. He claims that Jesus is not a God and acting as so will be dangerous in the long run. While Judas is speaking strongly towards Jesus, Jesus is pictured being comforted by Mary Magdalene, played by Sara Bareilles. There is a short scene where Capiaphas, played by Norm Lewis, is shown with his constituents, the Jewish priests, studying Jesus plan. They discussed how he is handling his followers and the path he has taken They believe that he may be seen as a threat to the Jewish faith and will harm their people in the long run. Judas leaves the set after claiming he has lost faith in Jesus and his lack of plan. Peter, played by Jason Tam, then appears speaking to Jesus inquiring about his worries and stating that there is nothing to fret about. Jesus then asks the apostles to stay awake with him in the mists of the night. He puts his faith in them as they fall asleep. While they are asleep, Jesus speaks to God bringing to light his doubts about him. He exuberates that he has done more than any other man and questions if they will mean anything if he dies. He eventually gives in. Expressing that he is scared, sad, and tired, Jesus asks God to kill him quickly. The directors portray Jesus as being very drunk in this scene. He holds a bottle of wine in his hand and seems to be acting a bit unrationa. People may think this is distasteful and rude when Jesus is telling God that he did not want to move forward with
